Frigidaire Oven F9: Door Lock Engaged During Normal Operation
What F9 Means
F9 fires when the control board detects the door lock mechanism has engaged (or the lock position switch reports locked) during normal cooking or standby. The door lock should only engage during self-clean cycles. F9 during normal use means the latch system has a fault.

Common Causes
Lock motor relay stuck on the board. The ERC board's relay that powers the lock motor may have welded contacts, causing the motor to drive the lock even when the board has not commanded self-clean.
Faulty lock position switch. The switch may report locked when the latch is actually unlocked. The board reads this as an unexpected lock state and fires F9.
Wiring short. A shorted wire in the lock motor circuit can energize the motor without board command.
Immediate Concern
If your oven door is locked with F9 displayed and you are not running self-clean, your food is trapped inside. Turn off the breaker for 30 minutes to cool the latch motor and allow the spring return to disengage the lock. If the door remains locked after cooling, look for a manual lock release slot above the door frame.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas ovens involve live gas lines — a loose connection creates explosion and carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens run on 240V circuits. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Diagnosis
- Pull the breaker. Wait for the oven to cool completely.
- Restore power. If the lock motor immediately starts driving without any button press, the board relay is stuck. Replace the board.
- If the motor does not drive but F9 appears, the lock position switch is reporting falsely. Test the switch.
- If neither motor nor switch appears to be the issue, check wiring between the lock assembly and board for shorts.

FAQ
Can I cook normally with F9? If the door is unlocked and F9 is just a switch reporting error, you may be able to cook normally by pressing Cancel to clear F9 and starting a cook cycle before the code returns. This is a workaround only; repair the root cause.
F9 and F5 together. What does that mean? Both codes relate to the door lock circuit. Together, they confirm a systemic lock circuit fault, usually a board relay or wiring problem rather than the lock assembly itself.
Is F9 during self-clean normal? No. During self-clean, the door should lock, but the board expects this and does not flag F9. F9 only fires when the lock engages outside of self-clean mode.
