Frigidaire Oven F5: Self-Clean Door Latch Failure
What F5 Means
F5 on Frigidaire ovens relates specifically to the self-clean door latch mechanism. Self-cleaning ovens lock the door before reaching pyrolytic temperatures (900F+). F5 fires when the board commands the latch motor to engage but does not receive confirmation from the latch position switch within the timeout window.

The Latch System
The self-clean latch uses a small motor-driven mechanism that physically moves a metal hook to lock the door. A position switch on the latch assembly sends a signal back to the board confirming the hook has reached its locked or unlocked position.
Three components can cause F5:
- Latch motor: Failed or jammed motor cannot move the hook.
- Position switch: Failed switch cannot confirm latch position even though the motor moved the hook.
- Wiring: Broken connection between the latch assembly and board.
Diagnosis
- Turn off the breaker. Observe the latch mechanism (visible at the top of the oven door opening when the door is open). Is the hook in the locked or unlocked position?
- Restore power. Try initiating a self-clean cycle. Watch the latch motor. Does it attempt to move? A humming sound without movement means the motor is energized but jammed. Silence means no power to the motor.
- If the motor moves the hook but F5 persists, the position switch is not confirming. Test the switch with a multimeter (should read zero ohms when the hook is in the locked position).
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas ovens involve live gas lines — a loose connection creates explosion and carbon monoxide risk. Electric ovens run on 240V circuits. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Latch Assembly Replacement
Part: model-specific, $40-$80.
The latch assembly mounts at the top front of the oven cavity frame. Remove the screws securing it (typically two to four). Disconnect the wire connector. Install the new assembly. Most Frigidaire oven latch assemblies are pre-assembled with motor and switch together, so you replace the entire unit.

Can You Still Use the Oven Without Self-Clean?
Yes. F5 only affects the self-clean function. Regular baking and broiling at normal temperatures (up to 550F) do not require the door latch. The oven operates normally for cooking with F5 active. Only self-clean is disabled.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

FAQ
Can F5 lock me out of my oven? If the latch jammed in the locked position during a failed self-clean attempt, the door remains locked. Power cycle by turning off the breaker for 30 minutes. The latch motor should retract when power is restored, unlocking the door.
Is F5 a safety issue? No. F5 prevents self-clean from operating because the door cannot be confirmed locked. This is a safety protection working correctly.
Can I manually unlock the latch if F5 jammed it? Some Frigidaire models have a manual release lever accessible through a slot above the door. Check the owner's manual. If no manual release, a technician can access the mechanism by removing the back panel.
Frigidaire oven F5 disables self-clean only. For latch repair, our technicians carry common assemblies. Book a repair.
