The short answer
Start by deciding whether the noise is coming from inside the cabinet or from behind it. On a European refrigerator most new noises come from behind: a dry or displaced evaporation tray sitting on the compressor, or the cabinet touching the units either side of it. Both are free to fix. Gurgling and the occasional sharp crack from the liner are normal and are not faults at all.
What you are seeing
- A rattle or buzz from behind the cabinet, worst when the compressor runs — Note: The evaporation tray on top of the compressor has shifted or dried out. This is the most common new noise on the platform.
- A hum that seems to come through the floor or the worktop — Note: The cabinet is touching a neighbouring unit or the wall, and the kitchen is amplifying normal compressor vibration.
- Gurgling and trickling from inside after the compressor stops — Note: Refrigerant settling. Entirely normal and present on every unit of this design.
- A single sharp crack from inside, usually at night — Note: The plastic liner contracting as the cabinet cools. Normal, and often mistaken for something breaking.
- A rhythmic ticking or scraping that stops when the door is opened — Note: The evaporator fan on a frost-free model is catching ice. Opening the door stops the fan, which is the give-away.
- A hard vibration through the floor with the cabinet pulled clear of everything — Note: Compressor mounting grommets have hardened. This is a real fault, and the last one to reach for.

What to check, in order
- Stand still and decide whether the noise is inside the cabinet or behind it — Why: Inside means fan, liner or refrigerant. Behind means tray, contact or compressor. This one judgement halves the page.
- Open the door while the noise is happening — Why: A noise that stops the instant the door opens is the evaporator fan, because the door switch cuts it. Nothing else behaves that way.
- Pull the cabinet forward until it touches nothing on either side or behind — Why: If the noise changes or goes, the kitchen was amplifying it and no part has failed.
- Look at the tray sitting on the compressor and press it down with a finger — Why: A tray that rocks, is dry, or is sitting on debris is the most likely single cause on this list.
- Note whether the noise is continuous or comes and goes with the compressor — Why: Continuous points at a fan; intermittent and matching the compressor points at the tray, the grommets or the compressor itself.

- Put a spirit level on the top of the cabinet, front to back and side to side, and adjust the feet until it sits level and firm on all of them. — Tools: spirit level, adjustable wrench — Time: a quarter of an hour
- On a frost-free model, empty the freezer and let it defrost fully with the door open before deciding whether the ticking has gone. — Tools: towels, a shallow tray — Time: several hours
- Press gently on the top corners of the cabinet while it runs and note whether the noise changes, which indicates the cabinet rather than the compressor. — Tools: none — Time: five minutes

Unplug the refrigerator before pulling it out, reaching behind it or touching anything around the compressor. The start relay and overload sit on the compressor pins at mains potential whenever the unit is plugged in, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the plug is out. The refrigerant circuit is sealed and must never be opened, cut or vented by an owner. A refrigerator is top-heavy: get help to move it and never tilt it far, because oil can leave the compressor. Never chip frost off an evaporator with a tool. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. Where the service line falls
The tray is seated, the cabinet touches nothing, it is level, and a hard vibration continues through the floor whenever the compressor runs. The noise is a metallic grinding or a rising whine that starts the instant the compressor does and never varies. A frost-free model still tickes after a full defrost, which points at the fan motor or its mounting rather than at ice. The noise arrived together with a loss of cooling, because that pairing changes the question from a nuisance to a failure. A compressor or fan has to be replaced, because on this platform the part is cross-referenced to a group-sibling machine rather than ordered by badge.
