The short answer
A compact cabinet rejects its heat through a small condenser into the room around it, so the room is part of the machine. Most cooling complaints come down to clearance, dust and ambient temperature rather than a failed component — and all three are owner-fixable. Check the temperature with a thermometer first, because the display is not evidence.
What you observe
- The cabinet runs almost constantly and still feels warm — It is working and losing: heat is coming in faster than it goes out.
- Food spoils faster than it used to — The practical measure. Keep the fridge at or below 40 °F (4 °C).
- The freezer section is soft and the fridge is cool — Reduced capacity rather than a dead machine.
- It got worse in hot weather or after it was moved — Ambient and clearance are the two things that changed.
- NEAR MISS — thick frost on the back wall — Ice blocking airflow is its own chain of events and is worth clearing before anything else.
Causes, most likely first on this cabinet
- No clearance for the condenser to reject heat — First on a compact cabinet. Pushed into an alcove, boxed into a desk return, or with its rear against a wall, the appliance rebreathes its own warm air and simply cannot keep up. This is also why the same cabinet performed fine in a different spot.
- Ambient temperature outside the cabinet's rating — Second. A hot room, a sunlit windowsill or an unheated garage puts the cabinet outside what it was designed and tested for, and no amount of adjusting the thermostat compensates.
- Condenser dust and blocked internal airflow — Third. Dust on the coil and a drum-packed cabinet both restrict heat transfer, and food pressed against the cold back wall blocks the circulation the cabinet relies on.
- Door not sealing, or opened constantly — Last here, and covered fully on the door-seal page: a door that leaks warm air gives the cabinet a load it cannot win against.
Check in this order, and why
- Put a thermometer inside and read it after several hours — First, because it establishes whether there is a fault at all.
- Pull the cabinet out and give it air on every side — Second: it is free and it is the commonest cause.
- Measure the room temperature and compare with the rating — An out-of-range room explains everything else and cannot be fixed at the cabinet.
- Clean the condenser and unpack the cabinet — Last of the owner steps, and it restores heat transfer inside and out.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before cleaning the condenser or removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On food safety, judge by the thermometer: a fridge above 40 °F (4 °C) for an extended period puts the contents at risk, and when in doubt the food goes, not the benefit of the doubt. Never use a heat source or a sharp tool to clear ice.
When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet still will not hold 40 °F (4 °C) with clearance restored, the condenser clean, the room within its rated range and the door sealing. Call when the compressor runs continuously and the condenser stays cold to the touch, or when it clicks and does not start. On a compact cabinet, sealed-system repair frequently costs more than the appliance, so ask for the diagnosis before authorising the work.
