The short answer
A dead compact cabinet is far more often a dead socket than a dead appliance. These machines live on switched sockets, timers and extension leads, any of which can go quietly out of service. Prove the socket with something else, plug the fridge directly into a known-good one, and only then treat it as an appliance fault.
What you observe
- Completely dead: no light, no sound — Supply first. An appliance with power almost always shows something.
- The panel lights but nothing ever runs — Control alive, load circuit not — a different and more serious case.
- A click every few minutes, then silence — The control is calling and the compressor is not starting.
- It hums, then stops after a moment — A compressor attempting to start and giving up on overload protection.
- NEAR MISS — it trips the breaker when plugged in — Stop. That is an electrical fault and no further owner checks apply.
Causes, most likely first on this cabinet
- No supply reaching the appliance — First on a compact cabinet, because so many are fed through a switched socket, a timer, an adaptor or an extension lead in a dorm room, office or garage. Each is a point of failure, and each is free to eliminate before anything else is considered.
- The control switched off, locked, or set out of range — Second. A thermostat at its off position, a control lock, or a setting changed by accident produces a cabinet that is powered and idle, which reads exactly like a failure.
- A protective device that has operated — Third. A compressor that has tried and failed to start protects itself and waits, so a cabinet that hums and stops may be doing precisely what it should while a real fault sits behind it.
- A genuine electrical failure in the appliance — Last by frequency. A failed start component, control or compressor is real, but it is what remains after the supply and the settings are excluded.
Check in this order, and why
- Test the socket with a lamp or another appliance — First, because a dead socket is the single commonest cause.
- Plug the fridge directly into a known-good socket — Second: it removes every timer, adaptor and lead from the picture.
- Check the breaker or fuse for that circuit — Next, and if it trips again on reset, stop there.
- Confirm the control is on, unlocked and set to cool — Last of the owner checks, and it costs nothing but a careful read.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If the cabinet trips a breaker or an RCD, do not keep resetting it: repeated tripping is the protection working, and the fault behind it needs a qualified person. Stop immediately and isolate the appliance for any burning smell, scorching at the plug or socket, or a cord that is hot to the touch.
When to call a technician
Call when the cabinet stays dead on a proven-good socket with an undamaged cord. Call when it hums and stops repeatedly, or clicks every few minutes without starting, which points at a start component or the compressor itself. Call an electrician rather than an appliance technician if other things on the same circuit are also affected. On a compact cabinet, ask for the diagnosis before authorising a repair — the parts often approach the price of a new appliance.
