How this shows itself
- A frost line or ice ridge along one part of the door or lid — A map of exactly where warm air is entering; frost forms where the leak meets the cold.
- The door swings back open or does not pull itself shut — A lost magnetic grip, a hinge spring or a cabinet that is tilted the wrong way.
- Frost or condensation appears at the top of the cabinet run, or the fitted door has stiffened — A built-in freezer sits in a warm cabinet, and any leak condenses where the cold meets the furniture.

Likely causes in order

- Second: Level it in both directions and look at the gap around the closed door for evenness. — Next, and it needs no tool.

A loaded freezer door or a chest lid is heavy, and a lid whose spring has failed can drop hard enough to injure a hand. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not chip ice off the sealing face with a tool: cut the gasket once and the leak becomes permanent.
When this becomes a service call
Call a technician when the paper test fails after cleaning and levelling, when a hinge is loose or a lid no longer balances, or when a new gasket has failed in the same place. Bring the call forward if the cabinet is also struggling to hold temperature, because the door is already costing you compressor hours and food.
