The short answer

- A buzz or rattle that starts and stops with the compressor — Something is resonating at the compressor frequency — a panel, a line or the floor.
- Frost or condensation appears at the top of the cabinet run, or the fitted door has stiffened — A built-in freezer sits in a warm cabinet, and any leak condenses where the cold meets the furniture.

What it usually turns out to be, in order

A garage slab or a basement floor is rarely flat, and a cabinet on three feet uses the whole slab as a soundboard.

- A fan blade catching frost or ice — On a frost-free cabinet, ice on the fan shroud is the most common source of a sharp repeating noise from inside.

- Second: With the machine running, look for a line touching the shell. — Next, and it needs no tool.
- Third: Note whether the noise stops when the door is opened, which cuts the fan. — Only once the checks above are clean.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the compressor compartment — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never reach into a fan cage on a powered machine, and do not tip a loaded chest freezer to look underneath: empty it first or get a second pair of hands.
The line between a fix and a call
Call a technician when a noise survives levelling and emptying, when it comes from inside the cabinet and stops the moment the door opens, or when it arrives alongside any change in how well the cabinet is holding temperature. Call immediately if there is a burning smell or if the compressor is too hot to touch.
