The short answer
White film on glassware, a chalky tub and dishes that come out gritty are hardness and detergent problems rather than mechanical faults on this machine. The filter is the second cause, and it is the one owners are least often told about. Pumps, heaters and boards account for very little of what actually gets reported.
The problems that actually happen, by what you observe
- White film on glasses that does not rinse off — Limescale from hard water, not detergent residue. It builds gradually.
- Chalky deposit inside the tub and on the heater area — The same cause, accumulating where the water is hottest.
- Gritty debris on dishes after a cycle — A loaded manual filter recirculating what it should be holding.
- Standing water over the filter at the end — Drain restriction — the filter again, or a hose problem.
- Dishes still wet at the end — Normal on a compact machine, which holds less residual heat to evaporate with.
- One rack cleaned and the other not — A spray arm blocked or stalled by a tall item during the cycle.
Problem classes in frequency order on this brand
- Water hardness with no softener to manage it — First, and specific to a compact machine that has no softener at all. Every wash deposits scale on glassware, the tub and the heater, results decline steadily, and no amount of extra detergent reverses it — only a rinse aid, a descaling routine and appropriate detergent for the hardness will.
- Filter neglect — Second. The filter is manual and needs rinsing regularly; loaded, it recirculates debris onto the dishes and then restricts the drain, producing two apparently different complaints from one cause.
- Detergent type and dosing — Third. Compact machines use less water, so dosing meant for a full-size machine leaves residue while under-dosing in hard water leaves film. Both look like a failing appliance.
- Spray arm obstruction and loading — Fourth. A single arm covers a whole rack, so one blocked jet removes a sector of the wash rather than degrading it evenly.
- Drain hose, pump and heater faults — Last. Scale shortens heater life over years, which is the one place where the first cause eventually becomes a mechanical one.
Which of these an owner can fix
Rinse aid, a detergent suited to local hardness, a periodic descaling cycle, regular filter cleaning, sensible dosing and checking the spray arms turn freely are all owner work — and between them they fix the great majority of Ellipse complaints. Call a technician when the machine will not fill or drain with a clear filter and hose, when there is a burning smell, or when protection trips with nothing else on the circuit.
