The short answer
Pull the machine out, clean the condenser, and give it space at the back and sides. Then check the seal and whether food is blocking the interior vents. Most cooling complaints on a free-standing machine end in one of those four places.
What you observe
- Fresh food warming while the freezer stays cold — An airflow fault inside the appliance.
- Both compartments warm — Heat rejection, or the sealed system.
- Worse since the machine was pushed back into place — No air path at the rear.
- Warm in an island or bar run during entertaining — Repeated door openings and a tight space.
- Running constantly and still losing ground — Working and failing.
- Not this fault: the machine cycling and holding temperature — Working normally.

- Condenser coils dusty at the rear or beneath — First, and entirely visible.
- No clearance behind or beside the cabinet — Second, and easy to cause.
- Door seal failing — Third.
- Interior vents blocked by packed food or bottles — Fourth.

- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, and never an owner repair.
Work through it in this order
- Read thermometers in both compartments — It turns an impression into a measurement.
- Pull the machine out and clean the coils — The highest-value step available.
- Leave a clear gap at the back and sides — Heat has to go somewhere.
- Test the seal and clear the interior vents — Both are quick and both are common.

Food safety and sealed systems
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the refrigerator at or below forty degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Never chip ice off an evaporator with a sharp tool, and never cut, bend or heat any tubing on the sealed system.
When to call
Call promptly when the coils are clean, the clearances are right, the seal holds and the machine still cannot maintain temperature - food sets the deadline. If the appliance is an under-counter or drinks cabinet in a fitted run, mention it, because the installation may still need to come apart for access even though the machine is free-standing.
