The short answer
Check whether the stall follows the time of day, because a shared supply loses pressure under demand. Then reset to a plain program with a balanced load. A blocked filter left by a previous user is the next most likely cause.
What a shared machine shows
- Long cycles only at busy times — Supply pressure under demand.
- Stuck at fill with taps open — Low incoming pressure.
- Stuck with water in the drum — Drainage, often a shared one.
- Repeated attempts before the spin — An unbalanced load.
- A program running far longer than advertised — Possibly the program itself.
- Not this fault: dead machine with no display — Read the will-not-start page.
Ranked for shared and apartment installations
- Low water pressure at peak times — First in a building laundry.
- Pump filter blocked by previous users — Second.
- Unbalanced load left or created by heavy items — Third.
- Shared drain running slowly — Fourth.
- A long program selected without realizing — Fifth.
- Valve, lock or control fault — Last.
Work through it in this order
- Run the same load at a quiet time — It tests the supply theory in one step.
- Reset to a plain program with a moderate load — Remove the previous user as a variable.
- Clean the pump filter before blaming the machine — On a shared machine it is usually overdue.
- Check nearby drains are running freely — A shared stack stalls every machine on it.
Owner checks
- Repeat the same load at an off-peak time — The single most informative test here.
About 90 min
- Open both taps fully and check the inlet screens — Debris collects in shared plumbing.
Tools: pliers, clothAbout 25 min
- Clean the pump filter over a shallow tray — Expect more in it than in a household machine.
Tools: shallow tray, towelsAbout 30 min
- Redistribute the load by hand before the spin — Heavy single items cannot be balanced.
About 15 min
- Try a short plain program as a control — It separates the program from a fault.
About 45 min
- Stop before opening the cabinet, and report a shared machine instead — Repairs there belong to the operator.
Shared machines and locked doors
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never force a locked door: the machine holds it while water is in the drum. In a shared laundry do not attempt repairs on a machine you do not own, and report a fault rather than working on it.
When to call
Report the machine to the building, the landlord or the laundry operator when off-peak running, a clean filter and a balanced load still leave it stalling. Call a plumber where the shared drain or the supply pressure is the problem, since neither is an appliance fault. A machine with a very high cycle count that stalls at the spin may be worn rather than faulty.
