The short answer
Note where in the cycle it stalls. A stall at fill means water supply; at heating means the heater or the program; at drain means the filter or the hose; before the spin means the load is unbalanced. Redistribute the load and check the taps and the filter before anything else.
Where it stops matters
- Stuck at the start with no water entering — Taps, hoses or the inlet valve.
- Stuck partway with water in the drum — Drainage.
- Time remaining jumping upwards — The machine is re-trying something.
- Repeated attempts before the spin — It cannot balance the load.
- Ends with wet laundry and no error — A spin abandoned after failed balancing.

Ranked by where the cycle stalls
- Unbalanced load preventing the spin — First, and the most misdiagnosed.
- Water supply restricted or a tap closed — Second.
- Drainage restricted by the pump filter — Third.
- Heating slow or failed on a warm program — Fourth, and it stretches the cycle.
- Door lock not confirming — Fifth.
- Sensing or control fault — Last.

- Check both taps are fully open — A partly closed tap stretches the fill.
- Clean the pump filter — A slow drain stalls the cycle.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never force a door open during a cycle: the machine keeps it locked while the drum holds water or is turning. Turn off the taps before touching a hose, and drain the drum before attempting to release a stuck door.
When to call
Call when the taps, the filter and the load balance are all right and the machine still stalls in the same phase. Say which phase it is - fill, heat, drain or spin - because it tells the technician which parts to bring. Repeated failure to reach a spin with balanced loads points at the drive or the sensing rather than at anything you can reach.
