The short answer
A smell of burning, scorch marks, or a breaker that trips when the dryer heats are all reasons to stop using it and disconnect it. The usual underlying cause is lint plus restricted airflow, and the usual fix is a full clean of the filter, the cabinet interior and the duct, done by somebody who can open the machine safely.

- A burning or hot-lint smell during a cycle — Stop the cycle and disconnect immediately.
- The breaker trips when the machine heats — A fault in the heating circuit.
- Scorch marks near the vent, the cord or the terminal block — Evidence of a connection running hot.
- The machine or the room becomes unusually hot — Restricted airflow with heat still being produced.
- A gas smell near a gas model — Leave the building and call from outside.

What lies behind these symptoms
- Lint accumulated in the duct, the cabinet or around the heat source — First, and the single most important thing to prevent.
- Restricted airflow causing the machine to overheat — Second, and the reason thermal devices exist.
- Terminal block or cord connection loose or burnt — Third, and the usual cause of scorching at the rear.
- Heating element failed to earth — Fourth, and it trips the protective device exactly when heating starts.
- Damaged supply cord behind the machine — Fifth: dryers are pushed back hard against their connections.
- Gas connection leaking on a gas model — Last by frequency and first by urgency.
What to do, in order
- Stop the cycle and disconnect the machine — Before any inspection at all.
- For a gas smell, leave the building and call from outside — Nothing else applies until that is done.
- Look at the duct, the hood and the filter — The cause is usually there.
- Leave the machine out of use until it has been inspected — A dryer that has overheated once will do it again.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your emergency number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Never bridge a thermal fuse, never run a dryer with a panel off, never vent one into the room, and do not run a dryer unattended if it has ever smelled of burning.

Call an appliance technician for a breaker that trips when the dryer heats, for scorching at the rear, and for any burning smell that persists after the duct is cleared. Call an electrician if the socket, cord or circuit is the hot part, and the gas utility - from outside the building - for any gas smell. If there is fire, leave and call the fire service; a dryer fire feeds on the lint inside it and spreads through the duct.
