The short answer

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not force the door open during or straight after a hot wash; the water scalds and the lock is there for that reason. If a breaker trips during the heating phase, stop using the machine and treat it as an electrical fault.
When to call
Call when hot programs run long and finish cold, because that pattern points at the element or the sensor. Call urgently if the machine trips a breaker while heating, since that usually means a failed element rather than a cold wash. Ask what the repair costs before authorising it on an older machine: an element and a sensor are routine parts, but labour on a front loader is not trivial.
