The short answer
Dull or poorly cleaned laundry is usually detergent dose, load size or wash temperature, in that order. A sudden change rather than a gradual one points at the machine, and the things worth checking there are the fill, the drum rotation and the drain.
What the laundry shows
- Whites and colours gradually going grey — Under-dosing, cool washing or overloading, accumulating over months.
- White streaks or powder residue on dark items — Overdosing, or a load too tight to rinse properly.
- Heavy soil left in place while light soil washes out — Not enough time, temperature or mechanical action.
- Laundry very wet at the end — The spin was skipped, usually for balance; see the cycle page.
- Results fell off suddenly — More likely the machine than the habits.
- Not this fault: clean laundry that smells musty — That is the odour page.
Ranked for a domestic front loader
- Overloading — First. A packed drum has no mechanical action and the wash becomes a soak.
- Detergent dose wrong for the water hardness and load — Second, in both directions: too little cleans badly, too much leaves residue.
- Wash temperature too low for the soil — Third, and it interacts with the first two.
- Program chosen for speed rather than result — Fourth, and very common on busy households.
- Fill quantity low from a restricted supply — Fifth, and the first genuinely mechanical cause.
- Drum not rotating properly, or a drain fault leaving dirty water — Last, and both usually announce themselves with other symptoms.
The order to work through
- Wash a half-size load on a full program and compare — It tests loading and nothing else.
- Check the detergent dose against the hardness of your water — Both under and over dosing produce complaints.
- Use a genuinely hot program for one comparison wash — Temperature is a cleaning input, not a luxury.
- Only then look at the fill rate and the drain — Machines come last because habits come first.
What to try
- Run a half-size load on a full-length program — A clear improvement names the loading as the cause.
About 90 min
- Measure the detergent rather than pouring by eye — Most households over-pour, and residue is the result.
Tools: measuring cupAbout 10 min
- Wash one comparison load on a hot program — It separates temperature from everything else.
About 120 min
- Watch a fill and judge whether water arrives quickly — A slow fill under-waters the wash.
About 15 min
- Clean the drain filter and the detergent drawer — Both affect what actually reaches the load.
Tools: shallow tray, brushAbout 30 min
- Stop before dismantling anything — The remaining causes need the cabinet open and that is service work.
Detergents and hot cycles
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep detergents and their capsules away from children, never mix laundry chemicals, and do not open the door during or straight after a hot wash, because the water scalds and the lock exists for that reason.
When to call
Call when loading, dosing, temperature and program have all been corrected and the results are still poor, because the remaining candidates are the fill quantity, the drum drive and the drain. Call sooner if the change was sudden, if the drum sounds different, or if the laundry comes out with visible dirty water marks, which usually means the machine is not draining between stages.

Scope of this page
Generalized across Electrolux washer families rather than written for one model line; where a family-specific or model-specific page exists it is the narrower answer. Not here: dosing tables, capacity figures, program temperature charts and detergent brand recommendations.
