The short answer
On a mounted unit the loudest new noises usually come from the vent blower, the mounting or the turntable, not from the cooking system. A deep hum only while cooking is the exception and points at the high-voltage side, which is not an owner repair on any microwave.
Listen for the timing
- A roar or rattle whenever the vent fan runs — The blower wheel or its ducting, and it is loudest at the high fan setting.
- A rhythmic scrape that tracks the turning plate — Roller ring or the drive coupler under the plate.
- A deep hum that arrives only while cooking — The transformer and magnetron under load; leave this one alone.
- A buzz that changes when the door is pushed — Latch and door alignment against the chassis.
- A metallic rattle from the cabinet above the range — The mounting or the trim, resonating with the appliance rather than failing.
- Not this fault: sharp cracking with visible arcing inside — Stop using it now and read the electrical-safety page instead.
Ranked for a mounted unit
- Vent blower wheel loaded with grease, or its duct loose — First on over-the-range installations. Kitchen grease builds on the wheel, unbalances it, and the noise grows over months.
- Turntable roller ring or coupler worn — Second, and the easiest to confirm because it stops when the plate is removed.
- Mounting hardware or trim kit loose — Third: a cabinet screw that has backed off turns the whole enclosure into a sounding board.
- Stirrer or cooling-fan motor bearing dry — Fourth, and it usually presents as a whine that rises with run time.
- Magnetron or high-voltage transformer under load — Fifth. A loud hum only while cooking, and it is service work in every case.
- Door latch or hinge rattling against the frame — Last, and the one most often solved by seating the door properly.
Work through it in this order
- Run the vent fan alone with the door open and no cooking — It isolates the blower from everything else in the appliance.
- Remove the glass plate and roller ring, then run a short empty cycle — Silence afterwards names the turntable and costs nothing to prove.
- Press gently against the cabinet and the trim while the fan runs — If the noise changes, the mounting is resonating rather than a part failing.
- Note whether the noise needs actual cooking to appear — That single observation separates the safe checks from the service call.

The one rule that matters on a microwave
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and inside a microwave that stored charge is lethal: the outer case is not an owner-serviceable boundary at any time, for any noise. Leave the door latch assembly and its switches exactly as built, and do not run the unit with the door misaligned.
When it becomes a service call
Call when the noise only appears while the unit is actually cooking, because everything that makes noise under load sits behind the case. Call as well if the blower still roars after the filters are clean, if a bearing whine keeps rising, or if the door has to be pushed to stop a buzz. Stop using the appliance immediately and call if you hear cracking or see arcing inside the cavity.
