Judge by the result and by the condensate
Run a normal load and check two things: whether it finishes dry, and whether the condensate tank has collected water. Water in the tank is proof that moisture is being removed from the laundry, which is the only thing that matters. A warm drum is not evidence of anything on this kind of machine, and neither is a cool one.
What you find
- The drum is warm rather than hot — Expected on these machines and not evidence of a fault.
- Cycles take considerably longer than a vented machine — Also expected, and it is the trade for lower temperatures and lower running cost.
- The tank collects water and clothes finish dry — Proof the machine is working, whatever it feels like.
- The tank stays empty and the load is still damp — A real fault, and this is the finding that matters.
- Drying times have grown steadily over months — A restriction developing, usually in the filters or the exchanger.
- NEAR MISS: a load that feels cool but is genuinely dry — Normal on a low-temperature machine and not a problem.
Ranked for genuinely poor drying
- A blocked lower filter or heat exchanger — First. It is the maintenance item owners do not know about, and it restricts airflow until drying stops working.
- A door filter with a softener film — Second. It blocks air invisibly and lets more fibre through to the exchanger below.
- A full or unemptied condensate tank — Third. The machine stops rather than overflowing, which reads as a failure to dry.
- A heating or refrigerant circuit fault — Last, and it is what remains when the whole air path is clean and the tank still stays empty.
Tank and filters before anything else
- Check whether the tank collects water on a normal load — It is the only reliable evidence that the machine is removing moisture.
- Wash the door filter and confirm water passes through the mesh — The invisible restriction, and the test is unambiguous.
- Open the lower flap and clean the second filter stage — The top cause, and often untouched since installation.
- Only then treat the heating circuit as the suspect — It becomes likely once the air path is genuinely clear.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and never run the machine with a filter missing: it is the only thing keeping fibre out of the exchanger. Never work on the sealed refrigerant system inside a heat-pump machine. Empty the condensate tank into a drain, and stop at once if anything smells scorched.
When to call
Call if the tank stays empty and loads remain damp with both filter stages clean and the exchanger clear. Call immediately for a scorched smell or a breaker that trips. Say the machine is a condenser or heat-pump model and describe what the tank does: that is the measurement a technician will want first.
