Check the programme selection before anything else
Look at the dial or the console and confirm that a heated programme is selected, not an air-only one, and that no low-heat or delicate option is active. Then run a short cycle on a normal heated setting and feel the drum. This takes two minutes and it is the first thing a technician will check.
What you find
- The drum tumbles for a full cycle with no warmth at all — The shape of the complaint, and it is shared by the innocent and the real causes.
- An air-only or refresh setting is selected — The innocent explanation, and it is more common than people expect.
- Heat works on one programme and not another — It proves heat is available, which excludes most real faults immediately.
- No heat on any programme including the hottest — The real branch, and it needs proper diagnosis.
- Someone else used the machine last — Circumstance rather than evidence, but it explains a great many of these.
- NEAR MISS: a cool-down phase at the end of a cycle — Designed behaviour, and a load felt at that moment feels unheated.
Ranked before any part is suspected
- An air-only or low-heat programme selected — First. It costs nothing to check, it produces the exact complaint, and it is the commonest explanation of all.
- A restricted duct that has tripped protection — Second. It produces genuine no-heat on every programme, and the duct is the underlying cause.
- A failed heating element or thermostat — Third. Real, behind a panel, and identified once the free checks are done.
- Part of the supply missing — Last, and characteristic: an electric machine tumbles and lights up normally while never heating.
Selection, comparison, then the air path
- Check which programme is selected — It is free and it resolves a real share of these complaints outright.
- Run the hottest available programme and feel the drum — Heat on one setting and not another proves the machine can heat.
- Clean the filter and check the duct — The dominant real cause, and the part an owner can address.
- Cycle the breaker fully on an electric machine — It excludes a partly missing supply in a minute.
Owner steps
- Look at the dial or console and note exactly which programme is selected — Air-only and refresh settings produce no heat by design and are easily left set.
Tools: notepadAbout 5 min
- Select the hottest normal programme and run it for a few minutes — Then feel the drum. Warmth here means the machine can heat and the complaint is about selection.
About 15 min
- Clean the lint filter and run water onto the mesh — Softener film restricts airflow invisibly, which is what causes genuine overheats.
Tools: warm waterAbout 10 min
- Switch the breaker fully off and on once on an electric machine — Losing part of a split supply leaves a machine that tumbles without heat.
About 10 min
- STOP before the rear panel, the element or any thermostat is touched — Mains voltage and a heater circuit sit behind them, and that is the boundary.
Before opening anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a dryer sits on a branch circuit protected at fifteen or twenty amperes and holds a stored charge in places after the power is off. Never run the machine with a panel off. Leave the door switch wired exactly as the factory fitted it, and stop at once for any scorched smell.
When to call
Call if there is no heat on any programme with a clean filter, a clear duct and the breaker cycled. Call immediately for a scorched smell or a breaker that trips. Say which programmes you tried: a machine that heats on one setting and not another is a completely different diagnosis from one that never heats at all.

Scope
Written for the Amana dryer class rather than one model line. Programme names, heat options and element arrangements differ by family, and the manual for your specific machine names its own settings.
