Run an empty hot wash with no detergent at all
If codes have been appearing intermittently, especially on longer or hotter programmes, run the machine empty and hot with nothing added. It clears accumulated detergent from the drum and the sump. If the codes stop for several loads afterwards, foam was the cause and the fix is a change of dose rather than a part.
What you find
- Codes that appear on some loads and not others — Intermittency that tracks what was washed, which points at detergent rather than hardware.
- Foam visible in the door glass late in the cycle — Direct evidence, and by that stage it has already affected the measurements.
- Longer cycles with extra rinses added automatically — The machine detecting foam and trying to deal with it before it gives up.
- Codes concentrated on hot or heavy programmes — More water, more agitation and more foam, which is where the effect appears first.
- A sticky residue in the detergent drawer — Over-dosing over a long period, and it accumulates in the machine as well.
- NEAR MISS: a code with a visibly blocked filter — A genuine drain restriction, and that is the other branch of this investigation.
Ranked for a front loader
- Too much detergent, or the wrong type — First. These machines use very little water, so a dose meant for an older machine produces far more foam than the sensing can tolerate.
- Detergent build-up in the drum and sump — Second. Months of over-dosing leaves residue that foams on every subsequent wash regardless of what is added now.
- A restricted drain — Third. It produces similar codes from a real cause, and the filter check separates it from the foam explanation.
- Sensing or control trouble — Last, and it becomes credible only after an empty hot wash and a clean filter change nothing.
Empty wash, filter, then the machine
- Note whether the codes follow particular loads or programmes — Intermittency tied to the wash is the strongest evidence for the foam explanation.
- Run an empty hot cycle with nothing added — It clears residue and it is the cleanest single test available.
- Clean the pump filter and check for a real restriction — It rules the third cause in or out definitively.
- Reduce the dose and watch for several loads — The confirmation step, and it is also the fix if foam was the cause.
Owner steps
- Write down which programmes produce codes and which do not — A pattern tied to hot or heavy cycles is the signature of a foam problem.
Tools: notepadAbout 5 min
- Run the machine empty on the hottest cycle with no detergent — Residue in the drum and sump foams on every wash until it is cleared out.
About 90 min
- Clean the pump filter behind the flap at the base — Have a shallow tray ready; there is more water behind it than expected.
Tools: tray, towelsAbout 25 min
- Halve the detergent dose and run several normal loads — These machines use far less water than older ones, so older habits over-dose badly.
About 20 min
- STOP before the pump housing, the door lock or the console is opened — Standing water sits next to live wiring, and that is the boundary of owner work.
Before opening the base
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening the filter flap or any panel, and turn off the water supply first. Do not open the door while water stands above the glass. Dry the floor before working near an energised appliance, and never mix cleaning products when running a maintenance wash.
When to call
Call if codes persist after an empty hot wash, a clean filter and a reduced dose over several loads, since the machine is then genuinely failing a step. Call promptly for leaks or a breaker that trips. Mention the detergent change you made and what happened: a fault that survives it is a different conversation from one that does not.

Written for the Electrolux washer class rather than one model line. Code tables, drawer designs and maintenance-wash programmes differ by family, and the meaning of a particular code belongs on the page for your specific machine.
