- A blocked vent, filter or outside flap — A dryer dries by carrying moisture out, so a restricted duct leaves the load damp no matter how well the machine heats. Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening a panel: a large appliance circuit carries far more than a lighting circuit and the terminal block is live. If the machine is a gas one and you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Never run the machine with the vent disconnected.
When this becomes a service call
Call when the vent is clear end to end and the machine still returns a cold load, because what is left is the element or burner, a thermostat or the supply, and all three need a meter.
