Most EdgeStar dryer noise comes from the drum supports or from something loose in the drum rather than from the motor, and the sound itself tells you which. Only a persistent rumble or a metallic scrape points at work that needs a technician.
What you are seeing and hearing
- A roar or a whine from the back of the machine — The blower lives there.
- The whole unit is affected at once rather than one part of it — A compact machine has one small circuit, so nothing here fails by halves.

The causes, most likely first on this brand
- The machine is not level, or it is touching the washer — Dryers stand next to washers on hard floors, and a machine with one foot short drums against whatever it touches. Ranked first on an EdgeStar dryer: these are routinely pushed under a counter or built into a cabinet, and the clearance the manufacturer asks for is rarely there.
- Coins, a zip pull or a pen loose in the drum or the blower — Anything that falls out of a pocket ends up either tumbling with the load or drawn into the blower housing. Ranked second on an EdgeStar dryer: a small cabinet is overfilled more often than a large one, and the symptoms of that look like a fault.
- The blower wheel clogged with lint or loose on its shaft — The blower pulls all the air through the machine, so lint that gets past the filter collects on it. Ranked third on an EdgeStar dryer: a single small evaporator serves the entire cabinet here, so anything that blocks it takes the whole unit with it.
- The drive belt — A belt that has begun to fray slaps rather than squeals, and a belt about to break makes a thump once per drum revolution. Ranked fourth on an EdgeStar dryer: this one is real, gets steadily worse and never recovers, so it is worth reaching once the free checks are clean.
The order to work in, and the reason for it
- Rock the machine at each corner and check what it touches — Anything that moves or touches is a cause before anything inside is.
- Empty the drum and run the machine for a few seconds — Noise from an empty drum with nothing in it points at the blower.
- Note whether the noise is loudest at the back and rises with the machine — A roar from the back that is there from the moment it starts is the blower.

- Level the machine in both directions and leave a gap between it and anything beside it — Check the feet are locked once level.

Before you touch anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening a panel: a large appliance circuit carries far more than a lighting circuit and the terminal block is live. If the machine is a gas one and you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Never run the machine with the vent disconnected.
When to call a technician
Call when the drum is empty, the machine is level and the blower is clear, and the noise still follows the drum round, because rollers, glides and belts all mean the cabinet open. Call immediately if you hear a metallic scrape or smell burning, because a dryer is the one appliance where a hot fault and a lint supply sit in the same box.
