The short answer
An EdgeStar dryer that stops early is usually either overheating because it cannot vent, or being told by a fouled moisture sensor that the load is already dry. Both are owner-checkable, and the vent is worth clearing whatever else you find.
What you actually observe
- It restarts after cooling and then stops again — A thermal device resetting is exactly this pattern.
- The whole unit is affected at once rather than one part of it — A compact machine has one small circuit, so nothing here fails by halves.
- NEAR MISS: the drum turns but there is no heat at all — That is a heating fault and it has its own page.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- A restricted vent making the machine overheat and cut out — Every dryer has a thermal cut-out that stops it when it cannot shed heat. Ranked first on an EdgeStar dryer: a single small evaporator serves the entire cabinet here, so anything that blocks it takes the whole unit with it.
- Overloading, or one heavy item on its own — A drum packed tight cannot tumble, so wet fabric sits against the sensor and against itself. Ranked second on an EdgeStar dryer: a small cabinet is overfilled more often than a large one, and the symptoms of that look like a fault.

What to check first, second and third
- Go outside and check the flap opens fully while the machine is running — A flap that barely lifts means the machine is not venting.

- Find the two metal strips inside the drum and feel them for a film — A short auto cycle with a long timed cycle working normally is this fault.

- Clean the lint filter, then disconnect and clear the transition hose and check the outside flap — This is the most valuable maintenance a dryer ever gets.

Before you touch anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening a panel: a large appliance circuit carries far more than a lighting circuit and the terminal block is live. If the machine is a gas one and you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Never run the machine with the vent disconnected.
When to call a technician
Call when the vent is genuinely clear end to end, the sensor bars are clean and the load is a sensible size, and the machine still stops early: what is left is a thermostat, a thermal device or the control. Call immediately if you smell burning or scorched fabric, and stop using the machine until it has been looked at.
