The short version
Damp clothes at the end of a full cycle point at the heat source or at the air path, and the air path is far more often the culprit. On an EdgeStar dryer the order that matters is this: "The machine cannot move air through the load" first, then the rest of the list below. Ventless and built-in designs move heat and water differently from a freestanding machine, and the diagnosis has to follow that path.
The observables
- Clothes come out hot but damp — Heat is present; moisture is not leaving. This is one of the more useful things to tell a technician about an EdgeStar dryer.
- The drum turns perfectly normally — The mechanical side is healthy.
- The problem started with no other change — A setting is the simplest explanation. An appliance doing this is telling you where to start.
- NEAR MISS — only large loads fail to dry — A capacity limit, not a fault. If that is your EdgeStar dryer, the bottom of the ranking below is where to start — and this may not be the nearest page for it.
Causes, most likely first on an EdgeStar dryer
- A blocked vent run — Top of the list here. It ranks first because a restricted duct produces the same wet laundry as a dead heater while also being the more common and more dangerous fault. It stays at this place in the EdgeStar dryer order until the checks above it are clean.
- Heating element or gas ignition failed — Next most likely. Cold air throughout the cycle removes airflow from the picture entirely.
- Programme or option set to air-only — Third in order. It costs nothing to eliminate. It stays at this place in the EdgeStar dryer order until the checks above it are clean.
- The drum is overloaded — Last — rare, and the costly one. It is free to test with a small load.
The order to check them in
- To begin: Feel the airflow at the outside outlet with the machine running. — It is the cheapest thing to prove on an EdgeStar dryer, and it sits at the top of the ranking above.
- Then: Note whether there is heat at the start and then none. — This is the check that tells the two mid-list EdgeStar dryer causes apart.
- And third: Check which programme and options are selected. — On an EdgeStar dryer it only means something after the first two have been eliminated.
Owner-side checks, in order
- Check the flow at the outside vent — Weak flow at the outlet with the machine running is the diagnosis.
About 15 min
- Feel the exhaust air a few minutes into a cycle — Air that never warms at all points at the heat source rather than the duct.
About 15 min
- Select a standard heated programme — Run a normal cycle with no eco or air option and compare the result.
About 45 min
- Stop before anything that means working on a live circuit — On an EdgeStar dryer the owner checks end at observation; a diagnosis that needs instruments belongs to a technician.
Before you open anything
Safety
None of the checks on this EdgeStar dryer page require a live appliance. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If the plug, the outlet or the terminal is warm, discoloured or smells hot, leave the supply off and call rather than running another cycle to see whether it repeats. Never run the appliance with a panel removed, and never work around the door switch to keep it running with the door open. Lint is fuel and this appliance makes heat, so a restricted exhaust is a fire question rather than a performance one.
Where the owner side ends
Where an owner stops on an EdgeStar dryer is a line, not a judgement call. If a check needs nothing more than your hands, a vacuum and a torch, it is yours; if it needs a meter on a live terminal, it is a technician. Call immediately on any smell of burning, any discolouration at a plug or terminal, or any protective device that has operated more than once.

The limits of this page
This is the general EdgeStar dryer page, and it says so deliberately — a family or model page beats it wherever one exists. Anything written for a single EdgeStar dryer family or model line takes precedence over what is here, and those pages are linked alongside. The EdgeStar Dryer Problems overview links them together. Deliberately absent: anything that changes between families — fasteners, part numbers, harness colours and the diagnostic-mode entry — since a figure that is right for one model is wrong for the next.
