- The front or base ventilation grille blocked — a built-in cabinet rejects its heat through a grille rather than a rear coil, and a kick panel, a mat or stored boxes across it removes the entire heat path — on this form it outranks the dial
- Frost build-up around the compartment — manual defrost is overdue, the ice insulates the plate, and the compartment loses what little freezing capacity it had — the same mechanism as the cooling page, seen from the ice side
- Thermostat dial set too warm — the chill compartment is the first thing to suffer when the dial comes down, because it depends on the coldest part of a single evaporator

Never chip frost off a plate or a mould with anything metal — the tubing behind it is thin and a puncture ends the appliance. Call for service when a cycle will not complete with water present and the sensors clear, when the compartment cannot be brought to freezing with a clear plate and the dial at its coldest, or when there is water inside the machine bay.
