The short answer
A Driven compact refrigerator that has stopped cooling almost always still has a working compressor. On this class the fault sits ahead of the sealed system — a dial that got knocked, a plate evaporator glazed over with ice because manual defrost is overdue, or a cabinet with no room to shed its heat. Most likely causes on a compact refrigerator, in order
- Thermostat dial moved or set too warm — a compact fridge is controlled by a mechanical dial with no display to contradict it, and the dial sits where bottles and hands reach it — this is the most common single cause on the class and costs nothing to rule out
- The chill compartment iced solid around the plate — a cube cabinet puts its freezing surface inside the food space, so ice that builds there both blocks the compartment and insulates the only evaporator the cabinet has
- Evaporator plate iced over — this class defrosts by hand, not on a timer; once the rear plate glazes, the ice insulates the very surface that is supposed to absorb heat, so the compressor runs longer and the cabinet gets warmer
What to check, and why in this order
- Take everything out of the chill compartment and look at the plate behind it — On a cube cabinet that compartment is both the symptom and the cause
- Check the dial first — It is free, instant and the most common cause — turn it to its coldest setting and note whether the compressor note changes
- Look at the rear inner wall next. — Ice there explains everything downstream, and if it is present the correct next action is a full manual defrost rather than any further diagnosis

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip, scrape or pry ice off the evaporator plate with a knife, screwdriver or ice pick. The plate is thin aluminium with refrigerant tubing bonded to it, and a puncture ends the appliance immediately. Warm air, a bowl of hot water inside the closed cabinet, and time are the only defrosting tools.
When to stop and call a technician
Call for service when the compressor hums and clicks off repeatedly on a good outlet, when the cabinet has been fully defrosted and cleared and still will not pull down after a long run, or when the rear coil is warm at one end and stays cold at the other. Sealed-system work is licensed work and is not a homeowner job.
