The short answer

Most likely causes on a compact refrigerator, in order
- A mechanical dial being read as a broken control — ranked first because on this class it is genuinely the most common call: the numbers are relative, higher is usually colder, and there is no feedback to confirm a change took effect
- A desk power strip or a switched socket — cube fridges go under desks and in dorm rooms, so they end up on strips that get switched off at night and on leads too thin to carry a compressor start
