The surface first, then the fan
A compact cabinet weighs very little, so it transmits every vibration into whatever it stands on. On this class of appliance the surface and the levelling explain most noise complaints, and a buzzing fan is the next thing to look at.
What you are seeing
- A buzz or hum that changes when the cabinet is touched.
- Rattling that stops when a hand is placed on the case.
- Noise that is worse on a desk or a shelf than on the floor.
- A fan whirring or ticking at the back.
- A gurgle or trickle from inside after it cycles.
- Not this fault: A silent cabinet that will not cool is a cooling fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: Nothing running at all is a start fault.
Most likely causes, in this manufacturer order
- Cabinet resting on a hollow desk, shelf or floor — Why ranked: First on a light appliance. The surface amplifies what the cabinet produces, and moving it settles the question in minutes.
- Not level, or rocking on one foot — Why ranked: Second: a rocking cabinet taps its surface on every cycle.
- Rear fan fouled with dust or catching a wire — Why ranked: Third. These fans are small, exposed and close to the floor.
- Loose panel or a shelf rattling inside — Why ranked: Fourth. Thin panels and wire shelves buzz at particular frequencies.
- Compressor or cooling element noise — Why ranked: Last, and identified by noise that survives a firm floor, a level cabinet and a clean fan.
What to check, in order
- Put a hand firmly on the top of the cabinet and listen. — Because: If the noise drops, it is the case or the surface rather than the mechanism.
- Move the cabinet onto a solid floor away from walls and furniture. — Because: This separates the cabinet's own noise from what its surroundings add.
- Rock the cabinet gently front to back and side to side. — Because: Any movement means one foot is not carrying weight.
- Look at the rear fan for dust, and for a cable near the blades. — Because: A small fan close to the floor picks up dust and can catch a loose lead.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never put your fingers near a running fan, and never run the cabinet with a rear grille removed. Isolate before clearing anything near the fan. Do not pack anything against the back of the cabinet to damp it. Move a full cabinet with help; do not drag it by the door.
When this becomes a service call
Noise persists on a firm, level floor with a clean fan. There is a metallic scrape or knock from the mechanism. The fan is noisy or does not turn. There is any hissing together with a loss of cooling.
