A small drain, a big consequence
Water in a vehicle refrigerator is usually condensate that has not reached its drain, and in a vehicle that water does far more harm than it would at home because it runs into structure. On this appliance the drain is a small tube at the back of the compartment, and clearing it is owner work.
What you are seeing
- Water pooling at the bottom of the compartment.
- Water under the salad shelf or the crisper.
- Damp appearing in the cabinet below the appliance.
- Ice building on the back wall.
- Water appearing after driving on a slope.

Most likely causes, in Dometic order
- Drain tube at the back of the compartment blocked — Why ranked: First on this appliance. It is small, it is in a wet place with food nearby, and it blocks routinely.
- Drain outlet outside the vehicle blocked or kinked — Why ranked: Second: the tube runs out through the vent area and can be pinched or blocked by debris.
- Vehicle parked at an angle, so water runs away from the drain — Why ranked: Third. The drain is at one point, and any slope sends water somewhere else.
- Door not sealing, so humid air enters and condenses — Why ranked: Fourth. It shows as frost on the back wall as well as water at the bottom.
- Ice on the back wall melting faster than the drain can clear — Why ranked: Last, and it produces a sudden appearance of water after a warm spell or a defrost.
What to check, in order
- Find the drain point at the back of the compartment and check it is clear. — Because: This is the leading cause and it is visible from inside the compartment.
- Check where the drain tube exits behind the lower vent. — Because: A blocked outlet stops the whole path even when the inside end is clear.
- Note whether the vehicle is parked at an angle. — Because: A slope sends condensate to a corner with no drain in it.
- Look for frost on the back wall as well as water at the bottom. — Because: Frost plus water points at a door seal admitting humid air.
Checks you can do safely
- Empty the compartment and mop the pooled water out. — N: 1 — Tools: Cloth, sponge — Time: moderate
- Switch the unit off and let any back-wall ice melt fully. — N: 2 — Tools: Towels — Time: one day
- Clear the drain point gently and flush it with warm water. — N: 3 — Tools: Soft brush — Time: moderate
- Check the drain tube outlet behind the lower vent for debris. — N: 4 — Tools: Torch — Time: moderate
- Level the vehicle and run for a day, then check again. — N: 5 — Tools: Level — Time: one day
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never clear a drain with a metal probe that could pierce the liner - the cooling circuit runs behind those surfaces. Water in a vehicle reaches wiring and structure quickly. Let ice melt rather than chipping it. Never use a heat source inside the compartment. Dry the cabinet fully before restoring power.
When this becomes a service call
Water returns with a clear drain and the vehicle level. The drain tube outlet cannot be reached or cleared. Damp is spreading into the vehicle structure. There is water at the back of the appliance as well as inside.
