Two catches, and a moving vehicle
A refrigerator door in a vehicle has to survive travel as well as use, so it carries a travel catch as well as a normal one. Most door complaints on these units are about that catch, or about a cabinet that has shifted slightly on its mountings, rather than about the gasket itself.
What you are seeing
- The door swings open in transit.
- The travel catch does not hold.
- Condensation on the door frame.
- The gasket is flattened or holding grit.
- A visible gap at one corner of the door.

Most likely causes, in Dometic order
- Travel catch worn or not engaged — Why ranked: First on a vehicle refrigerator. A door that opens in transit spills the contents and can damage the cabinet.
- Cabinet shifted slightly on its mountings after travel — Why ranked: Second: the door then does not meet the frame squarely and no gasket work will correct it.
- Gasket hardened or holding grit — Why ranked: Third. Vehicles are dusty and gaskets are rarely cleaned, and residue holds the seal off the frame.
- Hinge worn from repeated travel loading — Why ranked: Fourth, and it shows as a door out of line rather than one that simply leaks.
- Door adjusted or refitted incorrectly after work — Why ranked: Last, and normally only where the door has been off.
What to check, in order
- Check the travel catch engages and holds firmly. — Because: This is the first cause and it matters most, because a door that opens on the road is a real hazard.
- Look along the closed door for a gap and note which corner. — Because: A one-corner gap is alignment; an all-round gap is the gasket.
- Run a finger round the gasket for grit and hard sections. — Because: Dust and grit collect in vehicles and hold the seal off the frame.
- Check the cabinet fixings are tight and the unit has not shifted. — Because: Travel movement puts the door out of square with the frame.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator door that opens in transit throws its contents into the cabin - never travel with a travel catch that does not hold. Never wedge or tape a door to hold it shut for a journey. Do not travel with a loose or shifted cabinet. Keep the vent space behind the appliance clear at all times.
When this becomes a service call
The travel catch will not hold the door. A gap remains after cleaning and after the fixings are checked. The cabinet has shifted on its mountings. The gasket is split or has come out of its channel.
