Frost on the plate is normal
A DC compressor cool box or refrigerator cools through an evaporator plate, and frost on that plate is normal. What owners report as an ice fault is usually frost that has grown thick enough to insulate the plate, which then makes the whole cabinet worse.
What you are seeing
- Thick frost or ice on the evaporator plate.
- Contents freezing against the plate.
- The cabinet is warmer despite the compressor running more.
- Frost returns within days of clearing it.
- Ice building around the plate mounting.

Most likely causes, in Dometic order
- Normal frost on the evaporator plate — Why ranked: First, because it is not a fault. A thin layer is expected on this design.
- Frost thick enough to insulate the plate — Why ranked: Second: once the layer grows, it stops the plate absorbing heat, and the cabinet gets warmer even as the compressor runs harder.
- Humid air entering repeatedly through the lid or door — Why ranked: Third. Every opening admits moisture that freezes on the coldest surface, and a top-opening box loses a lot of air each time.
- Seal not closing, so moist air enters continuously — Why ranked: Fourth. This is what turns normal frost into thick, self-sustaining ice.
- Thermostat set colder than needed — Why ranked: Last, which freezes contents against the plate as well as building frost.
What to check, in order
- Look at whether the frost is thin and even or thick and uneven. — Because: Thin is normal on this design; thick means moist air is getting in or it has simply been left too long.
- Note whether the compressor runs more while the cabinet gets warmer. — Because: That combination is an insulated plate rather than a refrigeration fault.
- Check the seal along the whole lid or door for flats and gaps. — Because: A leaking seal is what makes frost self-sustaining.
- Check whether contents are pressed against the plate. — Because: Contact freezing is a packing habit rather than a fault.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off an evaporator plate with a knife or a screwdriver - the refrigerant circuit is inside that plate, and a puncture ends the appliance. Isolate at the battery switch before any DC work. Let frost melt rather than forcing it. Never use a heat gun or boiling water on the plate. Keep the drain clear so melt water leaves the cabinet.
When this becomes a service call
Frost returns thickly within days of a full defrost. The plate frosts unevenly, with a clear area that never gets cold. The cabinet cannot hold temperature with a clean, dry plate. Ice forms around the plate mounting rather than on the plate.
