A Dometic dryer that tumbles without drying is usually not venting rather than not heating, and a blocked duct both slows drying and trips the machine’s protection. Check the vent before anything else, because it is free, it is common, and it matters for safety.
The symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- The behaviour changes between battery power and a mains supply — That is the supply talking rather than the appliance.
- Drying takes several cycles where it used to take one — A gradual restriction rather than a sudden failure.
- NEAR MISS: it stops part-way through — A machine cutting out is a cycle fault and belongs on that page.
The causes, most likely first on this brand
- One leg of the supply lost on an electric machine — An electric dryer takes its motor from one leg and its heat from both. Ranked first on a Dometic dryer: a DC supply that sags under load looks exactly like a failed appliance, so the voltage at the unit itself comes first.
- A vent run too long, or venting into the wrong place — A duct run across a house, or one that discharges into a roof space, cannot carry moisture away. Ranked second on a Dometic dryer: ventilation around the compressor compartment is whatever the vehicle or the locker allows, and it is usually too little.
- The element, or the igniter and flame sensor on a gas machine — An electric element opens with age and the machine tumbles cold. Ranked third on a Dometic dryer: an owner cannot prove this one, which is why everything checkable comes before it.
- Overloading, or the wrong cycle for the load — A packed drum cannot tumble and a low-heat or refresh cycle is not meant to dry a full wash. Ranked fourth on a Dometic dryer: habits and loading cost nothing to change, so they are worth clearing before any component is suspected.
What to check first, second and third
- Note whether the drum turns normally with no warmth whatsoever in the exhaust — Perfect tumbling with zero heat points straight here.
- Trace where the duct actually discharges — A duct that ends in a loft or a cupboard is the whole fault.
- On a gas machine, listen for the burner lighting in the first minutes — A burner that lights and drops out is a flame-sensing fault.

- Run a half load on the full heat cycle and compare the result — That comparison separates a fault from a setting in one cycle.

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening a panel: a large appliance circuit carries far more than a lighting circuit and the terminal block is live. If the machine is a gas one and you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Never run the machine with the vent disconnected.
When this becomes a service call
Call when the vent is clear end to end and the machine still returns a cold load, because what is left is the element or burner, a thermostat or the supply, and all three need a meter. Call immediately if you smell gas on a gas machine: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside.
