The short version
A Dometic dryer that stops early is usually either overheating because it cannot vent, or being told by a fouled moisture sensor that the load is already dry. Both are owner-checkable, and the vent is worth clearing whatever else you find.
What you actually observe
- The behaviour changes between battery power and a mains supply — That is the supply talking rather than the appliance.
- A timed cycle runs fully but dries poorly — That separates sensing from heating.
- NEAR MISS: the drum turns but there is no heat at all — That is a heating fault and it has its own page.
Causes in order of likelihood on this brand
- One leg of the supply lost on an electric machine — An electric dryer uses one supply leg for the motor and both for the heat. Ranked first on a Dometic dryer: a DC supply that sags under load looks exactly like a failed appliance, so the voltage at the unit itself comes first.
- A vent run that is too long or too convoluted — Every bend and every extra length of duct costs airflow, and a machine vented across a house was struggling from the day it was installed. Ranked second on a Dometic dryer: ventilation around the compressor compartment is whatever the vehicle or the locker allows, and it is usually too little.
- Moisture-sensor bars fouled by fabric-softener film — Auto cycles read the load through metal bars inside the drum. Ranked third on a Dometic dryer: the controller protects itself by shutting down rather than by failing, so its warnings usually point somewhere else.
- A restricted vent making the machine overheat and cut out — Every dryer has a thermal cut-out that stops it when it cannot shed heat. Ranked fourth on a Dometic dryer: air movement is what actually does the work here, so a blockage shows up as a failure long before anything fails.
The order to work in, and the reason for it
- Feel whether there is any heat at all in the exhaust air — A turning drum with no heat whatsoever points here.
- Trace the whole duct run and count the bends — A machine that has never dried well in one house is an installation story.
- Find the two metal strips inside the drum and feel them for a film — A short auto cycle with a long timed cycle working normally is this fault.
Owner checks, in order
- Shorten or straighten what you can of the duct run and replace any flexible foil hose with rigid duct — Foil concertina hose is the single worst thing in most vent runs.

Before you touch anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before opening a panel: a large appliance circuit carries far more than a lighting circuit and the terminal block is live. If the machine is a gas one and you smell gas, do not switch anything on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or the emergency number from outside. Never run the machine with the vent disconnected.
When this becomes a service call
Call when the vent is genuinely clear end to end, the sensor bars are clean and the load is a sensible size, and the machine still stops early: what is left is a thermostat, a thermal device or the control. Call immediately if you smell burning or scorched fabric, and stop using the machine until it has been looked at.
