Safe floor, then the timing
Water at a compact washer in an apartment closet is a fall hazard first. The usual sources are a hose fitting that was never fully tightened, a drain hose that has come out of its standpipe, and over-dosing that pushes foam past the door - all of which show a clear pattern in when the water appears.
What you are seeing
- Water on the closet floor after a cycle.
- Water only during the fill.
- Suds escaping at the door during the wash.
- Water appearing only at the drain step.
- Damp spreading from the closet into the room.

Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Drain hose out of the standpipe or loose at the machine — Why ranked: First on a closet installation. It gives water only at the drain step and it is the easiest thing to find.
- Supply hose fitting not fully tightened or its washer missing — Why ranked: Second: it drips at the fill and often only under pressure, so the floor is wet after a cycle rather than during it.
- Over-dosing detergent, so foam escapes at the door — Why ranked: Third. Compact machines need far less detergent than people expect, and excess foam pushes past a healthy seal.
- Door seal holding debris or damaged — Why ranked: Fourth. It gives water at the door during the wash rather than at any other stage.
- Pump filter cap not tightened after cleaning — Why ranked: Last, and it produces a leak that began immediately after someone worked on the machine.
What to check, in order
- Dry the floor and note at which stage the water returns. — Because: Fill, wash and drain each point at a different connection, and this observation does most of the work.
- Check the drain hose is secure in the standpipe and at the machine. — Because: This is the leading cause and it is visible without tools.
- Look at how much detergent is being used. — Because: Compact machines need much less than most people use, and foam looks exactly like a leak.
- Feel the supply hose fittings for damp with the machine idle. — Because: A fitting that weeps under pressure often leaves a damp trail even when idle.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water on an apartment floor is a fall hazard - dry it and mark it before investigating. Close the supply valves before any hose is disturbed. Never work at a machine standing in water. Do not tighten a compression fitting while the supply is under pressure. Report a leak rather than mopping it up each week.
When this becomes a service call
Water appears from under the machine with dry hose fittings. A supply hose is bulging, split or weeping. The leak continues after detergent and the door seal are excluded. Flooring around the closet has been wet long enough to be damaged.
