The hose route decides it
A compact washer in a closet drains through a hose into a standpipe or a sink, and how that hose was routed decides whether it works. Too low and the machine siphons; too high and the pump cannot lift; kinked behind the machine and it does neither. All three are installation questions.
What you are seeing
- Water remains in the drum at the end of the cycle.
- The machine drains and then refills on its own.
- Drainage is slow and the spin stalls.
- Water backs out of the standpipe.
- The machine has never drained properly since it was installed.

- Not this fault: A machine that never starts is a start fault.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Drain hose too low, so the machine siphons as it fills — Why ranked: First on a closet installation. The tell is a machine that seems to drain constantly, or refills after draining.
- Drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe — Why ranked: Second: it seals the pipe, air cannot escape, and the drain becomes slow or siphons.
- Hose kinked behind the machine in a tight closet — Why ranked: Third. There is very little depth in a closet and the hose is crushed whenever the machine is pushed back.
- Pump filter blocked with lint, coins or hair — Why ranked: Fourth. On a compact machine the filter is small and blocks sooner than on a full-size one.
- Drain pump failed — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a silent drain step with a clear filter and a correctly routed hose.
What to check, in order
- Look at where the drain hose enters the standpipe and how high it rises first. — Because: Height and depth of insertion are the two variables, and both are visible without tools.
- Note whether the machine refills after draining. — Because: Refilling on its own is siphoning, which is a hose height problem rather than a pump fault.
- Ease the machine forward and check the hose for kinks. — Because: Closet installations crush hoses routinely.
- Listen for the pump during the drain step. — Because: A silent pump with a clear filter and a good hose points at the pump.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A pump filter holds water - open it with a tray and towels ready, and never with the machine powered. Water on an apartment floor is a fall hazard. Never open a pump filter on a machine full of water. Do not run the machine with the filter cap loose. Dry and mark any wet floor immediately.
When this becomes a service call
The machine will not drain with a clear filter and a correct hose route. The pump is silent during the drain step. Water backs out of the standpipe. There is a burning smell from the pump area.
