Safe floor, then the source
Water at a washer in a shared laundry room is a fall hazard before it is a diagnosis. Because several machines stand over a common floor and share supply and drain lines, the first job is to make the floor safe and identify which machine the water actually came from.
What you are seeing
- Water on the floor beneath or in front of a machine.
- Suds escaping from a door during the wash.
- Water only during the fill, or only during the drain.
- Damp on the wall behind the machines.
- Standing water spreading from one machine to several.
- Not this fault: Water inside the drum at the end is a drainage fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: Standing water with no machine running is the shared floor drain.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Over-dosing or the wrong detergent producing suds that escape — Why ranked: First on shared equipment. Users bring their own detergent and dose it by habit, and foam pushes past a door seal that is otherwise fine.
- Door seal or boot torn or holding debris — Why ranked: Second: shared machines collect coins and grit in the boot, which cuts it and then leaks during the wash.
- Supply hose or fitting behind the machine leaking — Why ranked: Third. It gives water behind rather than in front, and it is often only noticed as damp on the wall.
- Shared drain backing up and spilling — Why ranked: Fourth, and identified by water arriving at several machines rather than one.
- Tub, pump or sump seal failure — Why ranked: Last, and not correctable in the room - it needs the machine out of service.
What to check, in order
- Dry the floor and note which machine is running when it returns. — Because: Identification is the whole first step in a bank of machines.
- Note whether water appears at fill, wash, or drain. — Because: Fill points at supply hoses, wash at the door and suds, drain at the hose and the shared line.
- Look at how much detergent is being used and what kind. — Because: Excess or non-machine detergent produces foam that looks exactly like a seal failure.
- Run a hand round the door boot for grit, coins and tears. — Because: On shared equipment the boot collects debris and it cuts from the inside.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A wet laundry room floor is a fall hazard for residents - mark it and report it before investigating anything. Never work at or behind a machine standing in water. Do not move machines to look behind them; report instead. Close the supply valves before any hose is disturbed, and that is facility work.
When this becomes a service call
Water is arriving from behind the machines. A door boot is torn or has come loose. Water appears at several machines at once. Water appears with no machine running.
