One machine or the whole room?
In a shared laundry the drains are shared too, so a washer that will not empty is often being defeated by a standpipe or a floor drain that several machines discharge into. Establish whether the problem is one machine or the room before anything is opened.
What you are seeing
- Water remains in the drum at the end of the cycle.
- The machine drains slowly and stalls at the spin.
- Water backs up out of a standpipe when a machine drains.
- Standing water at the shared floor drain.
- Several machines in the room drain poorly at once.
- Not this fault: Water on the floor with a clear drum is a leak - read the water leak page.
- Not this fault: A machine that never starts is a start fault.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Shared drain line or standpipe blocked — Why ranked: First in a community laundry. Lint and detergent residue build in a shared line and it affects several machines at once.
- Too many machines discharging at the same time — Why ranked: Second: a line sized for fewer machines backs up under simultaneous load, which looks exactly like a fault in whichever machine is running.
- Pump filter or trap blocked with debris from users — Why ranked: Third. Coins, tissues and hair collect fast on shared equipment because nobody empties pockets.
- Drain hose kinked or pushed too far down the standpipe — Why ranked: Fourth. Machines get moved for cleaning and the hose is easily left wrong.
- Drain pump failed — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a silent drain step on a machine whose filter and hose are both clear.
What to check, in order
- Check whether other machines in the room drain properly. — Because: This one observation separates a building drain problem from a machine fault.
- Look at the shared floor drain and standpipes for standing water. — Because: A backing-up line is a facility job and no work on the machine will help.
- Listen for the pump running during the drain step. — Because: A silent pump on a machine with a clear filter points at the pump itself.
- Check the drain hose is not kinked and not pushed too far into the standpipe. — Because: A hose too deep siphons and a kinked hose blocks, and both are common after cleaning.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Standing water in a laundry room used by residents is a fall hazard - mark it and report it before any investigation begins. Never open a pump filter on a machine full of water in a public room. Do not work at a machine standing in water. Mark a wet floor immediately.
When this becomes a service call
Several machines in the room drain poorly at once. The floor drain or a standpipe is backing up. A machine is silent during its drain step. There is a burning smell from the pump area.
