Transit bolts and levelling first

What you are seeing

Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Transit bolts or shipping brackets left fitted — Why ranked: First on a newly installed compact machine. The drum is rigidly bolted to the cabinet, so it cannot move and the whole machine slams instead.
- Machine not levelled on the closet floor — Why ranked: Second: a machine that rocks will walk, and closet floors are rarely flat where the machine actually stands.
- Out-of-balance load in a small drum — Why ranked: Third. A single heavy item in a compact drum is far harder to balance than the same item in a large one.
- Machine touching the closet wall, frame or a stacked partner — Why ranked: Fourth, and confirmed by hand pressure changing the sound.
- Suspension or bearing wear — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a rumble that has grown over time and does not respond to levelling or load changes.
What to check, in order
- Ask whether the machine has ever been quiet. — Because: Noise from the very first cycle points at transit bolts and nothing else.
- Press each corner of the machine and check whether it rocks. — Because: A rocking machine walks, and levelling costs nothing.
- Redistribute the load and restart the spin. — Because: If the noise goes, it was balance rather than a fault.
- Hold the closet frame and the machine sides while it runs. — Because: A change in the sound means contact rather than a failing part.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A washer that walks in a closet can trap a foot or pull its hoses off - stop the cycle rather than trying to hold the machine. Never reach into a drum that is still turning. Do not move a stacked pair alone. Report a machine that shifts position during a cycle rather than pushing it back.
When this becomes a service call
The machine bangs hard from the first cycle after installation. It walks with an evenly distributed load on a levelled floor. A rumble rises with spin speed on an empty machine. Noise together with water appearing under the machine.
