Hours and balance
Shared-laundry washers run continuously, so their bearings and suspensions wear on hours rather than by chance. On these machines the two things that matter most are whether the noise happens at spin and whether the machine moves, because both point at load balance and suspension rather than at anything the user did.
What you are seeing
- A loud rumble that rises with spin speed.
- The machine bangs and walks on the floor at spin.
- A scrape or grind in time with the drum turning.
- A rattle from the drum on every rotation.
- A knock only when the load is heavy.
- Not this fault: A machine that hums but does not turn is a start fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: A quiet machine that leaves clothes wet is a drain or spin fault.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Out-of-balance load — Why ranked: First on shared equipment. Overloading and single heavy items are constant here, and both produce banging and walking at spin.
- Suspension or damper worn from high hours — Why ranked: Second: once the suspension has lost its damping, a load that used to balance no longer does, and the machine bangs on ordinary loads.
- An object trapped between the drum and the tub — Why ranked: Third. Coins, underwires and hairpins get through constantly in a shared laundry, and the scrape follows the drum exactly.
- Machine feet not level or not locked — Why ranked: Fourth. On a shared floor a machine that is not properly footed will walk even with a good load.
- Drum bearing worn — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a rumble that rises with spin speed on an empty, level machine.
What to check, in order
- Note whether the noise happens at spin or throughout the cycle. — Because: Spin-only noise is balance and suspension; noise throughout is the drum or a bearing.
- Redistribute the load and restart the spin. — Because: If the noise goes, it was balance rather than a fault.
- Run an empty spin and listen. — Because: A rumble on an empty, level machine removes loading from the question entirely.
- Push each top corner and check the feet are down and locked. — Because: A machine that rocks on a shared floor will walk regardless of the load.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never reach into a drum that is still turning, and never try to stop a walking machine by holding it - stop the cycle instead. Report a machine that moves out of position rather than pushing it back and continuing. Never run a machine with a panel removed to listen to it. Do not attempt suspension or bearing work on shared equipment.
