High hours, early wear
Shared-laundry dryers run many more hours than household machines, so their wear parts announce themselves sooner. A rhythmic squeal or rumble on this equipment is usually the drum support or the belt idler, and the most useful thing a user can do is describe when the noise happens.
What you are seeing
- A rhythmic squeal that follows the drum turning.
- A rumble that gets louder as the load gets heavier.
- A metallic scraping from inside the drum.
- A thumping that follows every drum rotation.
- A rattle that stops when the machine is empty.
- Not this fault: A machine that hums but does not turn is a start fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: A machine that tumbles quietly and does not dry is a drying fault.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Drum rollers or glides worn — Why ranked: First on high-hour equipment. A rumble that increases with load and follows the drum is the classic sign.
- Belt or idler pulley worn — Why ranked: Second: a rhythmic squeal in time with the drum, usually worse from cold, points here.
- An object caught between the drum and the bulkhead — Why ranked: Third. Coins, buttons and pen clips get through in a shared laundry constantly, and the scrape follows the drum exactly.
- Blower wheel damaged or fouled with lint — Why ranked: Fourth. It gives a rattle or a whirring that changes with airflow rather than with the drum.
- Motor bearing worn — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a noise that continues even with the belt load removed by a technician.
What to check, in order
- Note whether the noise follows the drum turning or the airflow. — Because: Drum-linked sounds are rollers, glides and belts; airflow-linked sounds are the blower.
- Run the machine empty and compare with a loaded run. — Because: A rumble that rises with load points at the drum supports.
- Listen for whether the squeal is worse at the start of a cycle. — Because: Belts and idlers are noisiest cold and quieten as they warm, which is a very distinctive pattern.
- Check the drum interior and the gap at the front for trapped objects. — Because: Shared laundries feed coins and buttons into machines constantly.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never reach into a drum that is still turning, and never run a machine with a panel removed to listen to it. Report a machine that has begun to scrape rather than continuing to use it. Never remove a lint screen to investigate a noise. Do not attempt belt or roller work on shared equipment; it is a technician job.
When this becomes a service call
A metallic scraping or grinding from inside the drum. A rumble that has grown noticeably over a short period. A noise together with a burning smell. The drum turns unevenly or stops turning under load.
