The supply is hidden too
On a panel-ready built-in the ice maker is fed through a line that runs inside cabinetry, and the shut-off is usually behind a cabinet or under the sink where it is easy to close by accident. Supply and filter come before the ice maker itself on this platform.
What you are seeing
- No ice at all, with the freezer otherwise cold.
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen.
- Ice production slowed after a filter change.
- The ice maker fills but the cubes never release.
- Ice tastes stale after a period away.

Most likely causes, in Designer order
- Supply valve closed or the line kinked behind the cabinetry — Why ranked: First on a built-in. It is the least visible part of the system and the one most often disturbed by other work in the kitchen.
- Water filter overdue or fitted incorrectly — Why ranked: Second: a clogged filter throttles the fill, which gives small and hollow cubes rather than none at all.
- Ice maker switched off or its arm held up by a bin — Why ranked: Third. Very common, entirely free to check, and it produces a completely silent ice maker.
- Freezer not cold enough to complete the freeze cycle — Why ranked: Fourth. A freezer holds food safely at 0 F (-18 C) or below; above that the harvest cycle stalls and the mould never empties.
- Ice maker module, fill valve or harvest heater failed — Why ranked: Last, and what remains once supply, filter, switch and temperature are all confirmed good.
What to check, in order
- Check the ice maker switch and that nothing is holding the arm up. — Because: Free, instant, and one of the most common findings on any ice maker.
- Look at cube size and shape when any ice is produced. — Because: Small or hollow cubes are a fill restriction, which points at the filter and the valve rather than the module.
- Trace the supply line to its shut-off and confirm it is fully open. — Because: On a built-in this valve is concealed and is routinely closed during other work.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after a day. — Because: A freezer above its safe holding temperature will not complete a harvest cycle whatever the ice maker does.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 F (4 C) or below and a freezer at 0 F (-18 C) or below; an ice maker that has stopped can be the first sign the freezer is not holding. Close the supply valve before disturbing any water fitting. Never force a stuck ice mould with a metal tool. Dry the cabinet base before restoring power after water work.
When this becomes a service call
The freezer is cold enough and the mould still never fills. Cubes freeze but never release. The fill valve or filter housing is wet. The supply valve cannot be found or reached without pulling the unit.
