What a control fault means on a DeLonghi
A DeLonghi control complaint is usually the interface rather than the board behind it. These ovens use membrane touch panels and small rotary encoders that sit directly above a hot cavity, and heat and grease are what kill them. A panel that responds unevenly, or a display that dims when the oven gets hot, points at the panel long before it points at the processor.
What you are seeing
- Some buttons respond and others do nothing.
- The display dims, flickers or blanks once the oven is hot.
- A knob has to be turned past its mark to register a setting.
- The oven changes setting on its own mid-cycle.
- A code appears and the oven refuses further input until it is unplugged.
- Not this fault: A completely dark panel with no response at all is a no-power fault - read the will-not-start page.
- Not this fault: A panel that works perfectly while the oven stays cold is a heating fault.
Most likely causes, in DeLonghi order
- Membrane panel degraded by heat and grease — Why ranked: First because of where it sits. The classic signature is a panel that works from cold and loses buttons as the cavity comes up to temperature.
- Encoder or selector switch worn — Why ranked: Second: these are mechanical parts turned thousands of times, and a worn one produces settings that skip, jump or need overshooting to register.
- Temperature sensor out of range, so the board posts a code — Why ranked: Third. A sensor fault presents as a control fault because the code is what the owner sees, but the cause is in the cavity, not the panel.
- Connector between panel and board loosened by heat cycling — Why ranked: Fourth. Expansion and contraction back out ribbon connectors over years. It gives intermittent faults with no pattern in the buttons themselves.
- Control board failure — Why ranked: Last. A genuinely failed board usually takes everything at once rather than a few buttons, so partial faults belong above this line.
What to check, in order
- Work through every button and knob from stone cold and write down which respond. — Because: A cold baseline is the only way to separate a heat-related panel fault from a permanent one.
- Repeat the same sweep once the oven has been hot for a while. — Because: Buttons that worked cold and fail hot are the panel, not the board, and that is cause one.
- Note whether the fault follows a specific button or wanders. — Because: A fixed dead button is the panel; a wandering fault is a connector or a sensor code.
- Unplug the oven for a while and see whether the code clears and stays clear. — Because: A code that returns immediately on a cold oven points at the sensor rather than a transient.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never spray cleaner at a control panel - liquid tracks behind the membrane and turns an intermittent fault into a permanent one, and on a hot oven it can also flash to steam. Do not run an oven that changes its own setting mid-cycle - unplug it until it is looked at. Never bridge or bypass a control to make the oven run. Let the panel cool before cleaning it.
When this becomes a service call
The oven changes temperature or function on its own. A code returns immediately on a cold oven after a full power-down. The display blanks while the elements stay energised. Buttons are dead from cold as well as hot.
