The short answer
A washer that leaves laundry dingy, streaked or still soiled is usually doing everything mechanically right while being asked to do it with the wrong dose, the wrong temperature or too much load. On a Crosley the machine no longer reaching wash temperature comes first, because on a machine that has been in the same place for years, the parts that have been moving all that time are where the fault usually is. Dosing, loading, temperature and a maintenance wash are owner work; a heater or a valve fault behind them is not. - Washing comes out with white or grey streaks — Undissolved detergent or redeposited soil — a dosing and temperature story.
- Laundry smells unwashed even when clean-looking — Too little water temperature or too much load for the drum.
- Detergent is left in the drawer at the end — Weak water flow to the drawer, or a drawer that needs cleaning.
- NEAR MISS — Clothes come out dripping wet — That is a spin or drain fault, not a cleaning one.
Likely causes in order
- The machine no longer reaching wash temperature — Top of the list on this brand: on a machine that has been in the same place for years, the parts that have been moving all that time are where the fault usually is. A failed heater or a scaled element leaves every wash cold, which quietly removes most of the cleaning power from a cycle without any error at all.
- A blocked detergent drawer or siphon — Second most likely: The drawer siphon clogs with softener gel; detergent then sits in the drawer or flushes straight through before the wash begins.
- The wrong detergent dose for the water and the load — Third most likely: Too much leaves residue that greys fabric and feeds odour; too little cannot hold soil in suspension, so it redeposits on the load.
- A drum loaded too full to move the laundry — Fourth and the least likely here: Cleaning is mechanical: the load has to tumble and drop. A drum packed to the door cannot do that, so the wash becomes a soak. These units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first.
Working order
- Feel the door glass midway through a hot cycle — A cold door on a hot wash, with a long cycle time, is a heating fault and it belongs on the heating page. It goes first because on a machine of this age the wearing parts are where the fault usually is, and this one is quick to confirm.
- Pull the drawer out completely and look at the housing above it — A gel-coated siphon cap and a crusted housing are both visible and both stop the dose reaching the drum.
- Compare the dose you use against the water hardness where you live — Most households dose for harder water than they have, and the residue that leaves is the visible fault.

- Remove the drawer, wash it and the siphon cap in hot water, and clean the housing — An old toothbrush reaches the jets in the housing roof, which is where the water enters.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the taps before any hose comes off, and never bypass a door or lid switch to run the machine open.
When this becomes a service call
Call when the dose is right, the loads are sensible, the drawer and inlet screens are clean and the machine still washes badly — especially if the door glass stays cold on a hot cycle.
