Most washers heat their own water with an element in the tub, so a cold wash on a hot programme is a heating fault — and on a machine that heats, the cycle usually still completes, which is why it goes unnoticed for months. Causes, most likely first

Elements fail open, and in hard-water areas they scale until the heat cannot reach the water; both leave a cold wash with no other symptom.
- Scale and detergent residue insulating the element — Second on the list: In hard water an element grows a crust that acts as insulation, so the machine heats slowly, times out, and carries on cold.
- An eco or cold-wash option that is doing what it was asked — Third on the list: Eco programmes deliberately run far below their nominal temperature for much of the cycle, which owners frequently read as a fault.
- A hot-fill installation with no hot water reaching it — Fourth on the list, and the least likely: Where a machine is plumbed to a hot tap, a closed valve or a failed household hot supply removes the heat without anything in the machine failing. A dealer-channel unit is often connected to whatever tap, drain, vent or outlet the new room already had, which is where the fault comes from.
The sequence that saves time
- Feel the glass or the drum midway through the hottest cycle — A cold door on a hot cycle, repeatably, is a heating fault and nothing else looks like it. It goes first because on a machine of this age the wearing parts are where the fault usually is, and this one is quick to confirm.
- Ask how hard the local water is and when the machine was last descaled — Hard water plus no maintenance wash in years is the most likely explanation on an older machine.
- Run the hottest non-eco programme the machine offers — If that heats properly, the machine is working and the programme choice was the issue.

- Run a hot maintenance cycle with a descaling product, empty — It will not revive a failed element but it will restore a scaled one, and it is worth doing before any part is ordered.
