The short answer
Water at a refrigerator comes from one of three places: the defrost drain that has blocked, the ice and water plumbing, or condensation caused by a door that is not sealing. On a Crosley Professional a door gasket letting humid air in comes first, because a heavy door on a tall cabinet loads its hinges every time it swings, and the gasket is what gives up first. Clearing a defrost drain, checking the water line and adjusting doors are owner work; a drain pan or an internal water valve is not.
What it looks like from the front
- Water pooling under the crisper drawers — The classic blocked defrost drain — melt water backing up inside the cabinet.
- Ice building on the freezer floor in a flat sheet — The same blocked drain, freezing before it can escape.
- Water on the floor at the front of the cabinet — Usually the drain overflowing forward, or a water line at the rear tracking along the base.
- NEAR MISS — Condensation on the outside of the cabinet in humid weather — Normal on some designs and not a leak.
Likely causes in order
- A door gasket letting humid air in — Top of the list on this brand: a heavy door on a tall cabinet loads its hinges every time it swings, and the gasket is what gives up first. Warm moist air condenses on the coldest surfaces, and in a cabinet with a marginal gasket that produces water and ice in places that look like leaks.
- A drain pan that is cracked, displaced or overflowing — Second most likely: Melt water collects in a pan over the compressor and evaporates; a pan knocked out of place during cleaning or a move spills instead.
- A humid room and a cabinet with poor clearance — Third most likely: In a hot humid kitchen with a cabinet jammed into a recess, condensation forms on the outside and on the door frames, which reads as a leak.
- An ice maker overfilling or a fill tube frosting — Fourth and the least likely here: An overfilling ice maker sends water down the back of the freezer, and a frosted fill tube diverts it before it ever reaches the mould. The moving parts are sized for the bigger cabinet and they work harder than their domestic equivalents.
Where to start and what follows
- Test the gasket with a banknote all the way round both doors — Anywhere it pulls out freely is a gap, and gaps are where the moisture is coming from. It goes first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out and it decides which half of this list you are in.
- Look at the pan under the cabinet at the back — A pan sitting crooked or full to the brim explains water on the floor with a clear drain.
- Check the clearance around and behind the cabinet — Air has to move round a refrigerator; a tight recess makes condensation much worse.
What an owner can safely check
- Clean the gasket, warm any folded section with a cloth, and check the cabinet is level — A cabinet tilted very slightly backwards lets the doors close themselves.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant is licensed work: oil or a hiss at the compressor means stop and call, and two people move a cabinet this size.
When this becomes a service call
Call when the defrost drain runs freely, the gaskets seal, the supply valve is proven and water still appears — a cracked pan or an internal valve needs the cabinet moved and opened. One line to keep in mind while you wait: A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below.
