The answer first
A dishwasher that finishes with water in the sump has lost its drain path, and on a built-in machine that path runs partly outside the cabinet — through a hose, often through an air gap, and often into a waste disposer. The reason a waste disposer knockout plug left in place heads the ranking on a Crosley is simple: these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first. The filter, the hose loop, the air gap and the disposer knockout are owner work; the pump and the check valve are not.
What you observe
- The machine stops part-way with a full tub — Most controls refuse to continue until the drain succeeds.
- Water backs up into the sink when the machine drains — That is the shared waste line, not the dishwasher.
- The drain motor runs but the level never falls — A running pump moving nothing means a blockage rather than a dead pump.

Why it happens, in order
- A waste disposer knockout plug left in place — Most likely here: these units change homes more than most, and levelling, hose routing and venting are what the move breaks first. A new disposer ships with a plug in the dishwasher inlet; if the installer leaves it, the machine has nowhere to drain at all and it is worst on a freshly installed appliance.
- A drain hose without a high loop, or kinked behind the cabinet — Second on the list: Without a high loop or an air gap the machine siphons and waste water runs back in; a kink stops the flow outright.
- A clogged sump filter and coarse screen — Third on the list: Labels, seeds, glass chips and a grease film close the filter gradually; the pump then draws through an opening that is a fraction of its design size.
- A blocked air gap on the sink deck — Fourth on the list, and the least likely: Where an air gap is fitted it collects grease and debris, and when it blocks the machine cannot push water past it. The service history is usually unknown, so the filters and seals are older than the owner thinks.
What to check first, second, third
- Ask whether the disposer or the dishwasher was recently fitted — A machine that has never drained since installation almost always means the knockout is still in. It goes first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out and it decides which half of this list you are in.
- Look under the sink at how the drain hose is routed — A hose that runs flat from the machine to the waste, with no rise, is an installation fault.
- Lift out the filter assembly and look at both parts of it — A greasy fine mesh and a coarse screen full of debris is the most common single finding on this appliance.
What to try before calling
- Check the disposer inlet spigot and remove the knockout if it is still there — Disconnect the hose, punch the plug out from inside the disposer and retrieve the disc so it cannot jam the impeller.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the taps before any hose comes off, and never bypass a door or lid switch to run the machine open.
What needs a technician
Call when the filter is clean, the hose has a high loop, the air gap is clear and any knockout plug is out, and the machine still holds water — the pump and the check valve are under the tub.
