The answer first
A washer that leaves laundry dingy, streaked or still soiled is usually doing everything mechanically right while being asked to do it with the wrong dose, the wrong temperature or too much load. A blocked detergent drawer or siphon is the first thing to suspect on a Criterion, because a value-tier build puts the cheap wearing parts — filters, hoses, seals, screens — in the path of everything the machine does, so they are where the fault usually is. Causes, most likely first
- A blocked detergent drawer or siphon — Ranked first here: a value-tier build puts the cheap wearing parts — filters, hoses, seals, screens — in the path of everything the machine does, so they are where the fault usually is. The drawer siphon clogs with softener gel; detergent then sits in the drawer or flushes straight through before the wash begins.
- The wrong detergent dose for the water and the load — Ranked second: Too much leaves residue that greys fabric and feeds odour; too little cannot hold soil in suspension, so it redeposits on the load.
- Weak water supply or a clogged inlet screen — Ranked third: A partly closed tap or a silted inlet filter gives short fills, so the machine washes in less water than the cycle expects.
- A drum loaded too full to move the laundry — Ranked fourth, and last: Cleaning is mechanical: the load has to tumble and drop. A drum packed to the door cannot do that, so the wash becomes a soak. A store-brand unit is usually carried home and set up by the owner rather than by a delivery crew, and setup errors survive for years.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the drawer out completely and look at the housing above it — A gel-coated siphon cap and a crusted housing are both visible and both stop the dose reaching the drum. Start here: on this platform it is both the most likely finding and the quickest to confirm.
- Compare the dose you use against the water hardness where you live — Most households dose for harder water than they have, and the residue that leaves is the visible fault.
- Check both taps are fully open and time how long the fill takes — A fill that takes noticeably longer than it used to points at the inlet screens.

- Remove the drawer, wash it and the siphon cap in hot water, and clean the housing — An old toothbrush reaches the jets in the housing roof, which is where the water enters.

What to do before a panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the taps before any hose comes off, and never bypass a door or lid switch to run the machine open.
Where an owner fix ends
Call when the dose is right, the loads are sensible, the drawer and inlet screens are clean and the machine still washes badly — especially if the door glass stays cold on a hot cycle.
