- Clothes come out with a greyish cast that builds over weeks — Classic detergent build-up and under-rinsing rather than a single failure.

- White or powdery residue on dark fabrics — Undissolved detergent, usually from too much powder, too cool a wash or too full a drum.

- Overloading — First by a distance. Mechanical action is how a washer cleans, and a drum packed past the point where clothes can tumble converts the wash into a soak. On a compact drum this happens with what looks like a modest load.
- Detergent type and dose — Second. Too much detergent does not rinse out and leaves the grey cast; too little leaves soil. High-efficiency machines use so little water that a conventional dose cannot be rinsed away.
- Wash temperature too low for the soil — Third. Cold cycles are excellent for lightly soiled loads and poor for body oils and grease, and a machine set permanently to cold will drift toward dinginess.
- Water inlet restriction or a failing fill valve — Last, and the only genuine hardware cause in the list: a partly blocked inlet screen fills the machine slowly, and the control may start the wash with less water than the cycle needs.

- Halve the load and repeat the same cycle — The fastest single test there is. A visibly better result at half load settles the diagnosis without tools.
- Reduce the detergent dose and add a rinse — If the grey cast lifts over a few washes, it was chemistry and not mechanics.
- Run one hot maintenance wash with no load — This clears accumulated residue from the drum and hoses, and it also reveals whether the machine can actually reach temperature.

- Fill the drum to the level the door seal reaches, not past it — A load should compress to about three quarters of the drum with a hand-width of space above. That space is where the cleaning happens.

- Run a hot maintenance cycle with the drum empty — Monthly, with a washing-machine cleaner or a plain hot cycle. This strips residue that would otherwise redeposit on the next load.

Water and mains voltage share a small cabinet in this machine, so the breaker goes off before a panel comes off and stays off while your hands are inside.
