A freezer that is running but no longer holding temperature is either failing to reject its heat, failing to keep warm air out, or buried in frost — and on a standalone freezer, where it lives usually matters as much as what is inside it. The reason a garage, porch or outbuilding that is too cold or too hot heads the ranking on a Criterion is simple: a machine that has just been installed or moved is far more likely to be reporting its setup than its age, and setup faults appear immediately rather than gradually. Coil cleaning, lid seals, defrosting and checking the room are owner work; the sealed system and the defrost circuit are not. The order below is written for a unit that is new, newly installed or recently moved; a machine that has run in the same spot for years ranks differently.
What you observe
- The compressor runs continuously and the cabinet is only slightly cold — It is working hard and losing ground, which points at heat rejection.
- Heavy frost on the walls of a manual-defrost cabinet — Frost is an insulator — past a certain thickness it costs more than it signals.
- NEAR MISS — Only the ice maker has stopped on an upright — That is the ice page; the cabinet temperature may be fine.
Why it happens, in order
- A garage, porch or outbuilding that is too cold or too hot — Most likely here: a machine that has just been installed or moved is far more likely to be reporting its setup than its age, and setup faults appear immediately rather than gradually. A standalone freezer is often installed where a kitchen will not take it, and an unheated space works against the thermostat: too cold and the compressor barely runs, too hot and it cannot keep up.
- Frost thick enough to insulate the walls — Second on the list: On a manual-defrost cabinet the frost layer is the heat path; once it is thick, the cabinet cannot cool no matter how hard the compressor runs.
- A condenser coil or grille choked with dust — Third on the list, and the least likely: Standalone freezers usually stand where floors are dusty, and the coil or skin condenser must shed heat into the room to work at all. A value-tier build puts the cheap wearing parts — filters, hoses, seals, screens — in the path of everything the machine does, so they are where the fault usually is.
What to check first, second, third
- Check the room temperature where the cabinet stands — A freezer in an unheated garage in winter can stop calling for cooling entirely while its contents slowly warm. First, because a unit that has just been connected is far more likely to be reporting its installation than its age.
- Measure the frost with a finger against the wall — A layer thicker than a finger is worth removing regardless of anything else on this page.
- Look at the coil at the back, or feel the side skins for even warmth — A dust blanket on a rear coil is visible; on a skin-condenser cabinet look instead at clearance.
What to try before calling
- Move the cabinet to a room within its rated climate range, or fit the maker’s low-ambient kit — Where moving is impossible, keeping the room above freezing does the same job.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant is licensed work: oil or a hiss at the compressor means stop and call, and two people move a cabinet this size.
The line between DIY and a callout
Call when the room is within range, the coils are clean, the gasket seals and a full defrost restored cooling only temporarily — the defrost circuit and the sealed system both need the cabinet opened. One line to keep in mind while you wait: A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
