The short answer, at family level
On the Criterion CFDR refrigerator family a cabinet that runs without holding temperature is an airflow and heat-rejection problem far more often than a dead compressor, because commonly two evaporators, one per compartment, or one evaporator with a damper-fed duct, depending on the variant is what this platform puts in the cold path. Only the last of the ranked causes below is outside owner territory. This profile generalises over the five codes below.
What owners of these models actually see
- Condensation or sweating inside the cabinet — Moisture that does not clear means warm room air is getting in, which points at the door seal before anything electrical.
- The compressor runs far longer than it used to, or never stops — The same fault seen from the other side: the cabinet is making cold and losing it, or making cold and not moving it.
- One compartment is wrong and the other is close to correct — On this cabinet each compartment can be fed on its own path, so one compartment failing alone is a real and useful finding rather than a contradiction.
- NEAR MISS: the cabinet is silent and nothing runs at all — Silence is a power, start-relay or control fault, diagnosed in a different order. Start there instead of here.
What it usually turns out to be here
- A defrost cycle that has stalled rather than failed outright — First wherever this family is frost-free: automatic, and where the cabinet has two evaporators one compartment can fail on its own while the other stays correct. Ice builds over weeks, so the owner meets a warm cabinet rather than a frozen evaporator.
- The evaporator fan has failed or is being stopped by ice — Second, because each compartment is fed on its own path, which is why a fault can be confined to one compartment on this platform and rarely is on a single-evaporator cabinet. A stopped fan gives a warm cabinet without the frost sheet the defrost fault leaves behind, and that is what separates the two.
- A door or lid seal that is holding the cabinet open — This platform carries three gaskets plus a hinged mullion flap between the two upper doors, and the flap is the part that gets missed. The hinged mullion flap between the two upper doors has to fold as the left door closes, and a flap that has stopped folding leaves a gap most owners never look for.
- Blocked condenser airflow or a dirty condenser coil — Ranked here by how this cabinet breathes: the condenser sits at the back or underneath and needs clear air on both sides of it. Heat that cannot leave comes back as a cabinet that will not pull down.
The checking order on these models
- Confirm the cabinet is actually running — Listen at the back for the compressor and feel the condenser for heat. A cabinet not running at all is a different page. Each step rules out a cause the next one would inherit.
- Look at the cold surface for a frost blanket — Open up and look at the rear panel of each compartment. Frost turned into a solid sheet is the cause, not a side effect, and it decides everything after it.
- Listen for the evaporator fan with the door held closed by hand — Press the door switch in and listen. A silent fan and a frosted coil point at different causes and want different parts.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not tape the door switch shut and walk away, and do not open, cut or braze any part of the sealed refrigerant circuit: that is licensed work. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below and a freezer at 0 °F (-18 °C) or below, so move perishable food out while you work.

When this stops being owner work
The split on these models is not subtle. Call once the airflow checks are clean, because what is left on this family is the sealed system and the control board, and neither is an owner part. Call immediately for a burning smell, oil around the compressor, or a compressor that tries to start and cuts out every few minutes: oil outside the tubing means the circuit is open. On this platform the cabinet has to come away from the wall before most work can start, which is a two-person job on a loaded cabinet.
