The short answer
Cold-but-running on the Cosmo EM microwave family is worth confirming properly before anything else, because a half-power setting, a defrost cycle and a demo mode all produce food that is barely warm. Once those are excluded the remaining causes are all on the high-voltage side, and this page hands over there rather than pretending otherwise.
What you see on the EM family
- The turntable turns, the light is on, the fan runs, and the food is cold — The control side is working perfectly. Everything that produces heat is downstream of it.
- A cup of water is no warmer after a full minute of running — The standard confirmation. It removes the possibility that the food was simply dense or frozen through.
- The oven is much quieter than it used to be — A running magnetron adds a distinct hum under the fan. Losing that hum while the fan stays is a useful tell on these models.
- It heats weakly rather than not at all — Partial heating points at a power setting, a defrost cycle or a magnetron near the end of its life.
Causes, most likely first on the EM family
- Magnetron at end of life — Ranked first on the EM family — on an oven that has worked hard for years this is the single most likely failure behind a cold cavity. The tube that makes the microwaves weakens and then stops. It usually goes quiet rather than dramatic, and partial heating for a few weeks beforehand is common.
- High-voltage diode or capacitor — Second — and cheaper than the magnetron, which is why a technician tests it first even though it fails less often. A failed diode leaves the magnetron without the voltage it needs, and the oven runs normally in every other respect.
- Power level, defrost or demo mode — Third — always checked before anything else: it costs nothing, and clearing it avoids a service call for a working oven. A low power setting cycles the magnetron on and off, defrost does the same more aggressively, and demo mode runs everything except the heat.
- Door interlock stack or the control relay — Fourth — but always worth naming because it connects this page to the door page for the Cosmo EM microwave family. The interlocks must all agree before the high-voltage circuit is energised. A switch that closes for the light and the fan but not for the heat produces exactly this symptom.
- Body: With only 5 codes in the EM family the ranking below is taken over a short roster rather than over everything the brand sells, which is why the top of this list is not where the brand-generic article puts it.
Check in this order, and why
- 1. Clear the power level, cancel defrost and look for demo mode — Set full power explicitly rather than assuming. This is the only owner-side repair available on this page.
- 2. Stop there and note what you observed — Everything remaining is behind the cabinet. What you have already established shortens the visit rather than replacing it.
- 3. Run the cup-of-water test — Cold water, one minute, full power. It is the standard confirmation and it separates a cold oven from a cold dinner.
- Body: The 5 codes in the EM family are close enough in layout that the order below holds across all of them; check the plate on your own unit against the table before you order anything.
Before you open anything
Safety
Never open a microwave cabinet. The high-voltage capacitor behind it holds a fatal charge after the oven is unplugged, and the magnetron itself carries materials that should not be disturbed. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before anything, keep the checks on this page outside the cabinet, and never run the oven empty as a test.

When to call a technician
Call once the power level, defrost and demo states are cleared and a cup of water still comes out cold — at that point the fault is the magnetron, the diode, the capacitor or the interlock stack, all of which sit behind the cabinet on these models next to a capacitor that stays charged when unplugged. Ask for the diode to be tested before the magnetron: it is far cheaper and it produces the same symptom.
