The short answer
Door faults on the Cosmo EM microwave family come in two kinds that look alike from the front. One is the latch stack, which wears with every close and is a legitimate repair. The other is physical damage to the door perimeter, and that one ends the oven rather than starting a repair, no matter how small the damage looks.
What you see on the EM family
- The door does not pull in and click the way it used to — Worn latch hooks or a strike that has drifted.
- The oven stops part way through a cycle and restarts if you re-close the door — An interlock opening under vibration. The switches are in a stack and they have to agree.
- The door hangs low, or there is a visible gap at one corner — Hinge wear or a dropped door. Over-the-range installs show this soonest because the door is heavier and hangs further out.
- The door rattles against the cabinet when it is shut — The latch is engaging but not pulling the door tight.
Causes, most likely first on the EM family
- Hinge wear or a dropped door — Ranked first on the EM family — where there is a visible gap or the door hangs, fixing the latch alone will not hold and the hinge is the real fault. The hinge carries the whole weight of a door that is opened thousands of times. As it wears the door drops, the hooks miss their true line, and the latch complaint follows from the hinge rather than from the latch.
- Worn latch hooks and a drifted strike — Second — it is the only part of the assembly designed to wear, and it wears predictably. The plastic hooks on the door engage a spring-loaded strike and both wear.
- Interlock switch stack out of sequence — Third — and the reason a door fault can take the oven out entirely: the monitor switch is designed to kill the machine rather than let it run unsafely. A microwave uses several switches that must close and open in a set order, including a monitor switch whose job is to blow the line fuse if the others fail.
- Damage to the door perimeter or the choke — Fourth — rare, but it retires the oven when it happens. The door seals by geometry rather than by a rubber gasket: a quarter-wave choke around the perimeter and an intact metal screen.

Check in this order, and why
- 1. Close the door slowly and feel for the pull-in — You are feeling whether the strike takes the hooks and pulls the door tight, or merely lets it rest.
- 2. Inspect the inner door panel and the window screen — Dents, punctures, corrosion or bowing. If you find any of it, stop here — the rest of the sequence does not apply.
- 3. Look along the perimeter for a gap or a dropped corner — Sight along the door against the cabinet face. A gap at the top or a low corner is hinge wear rather than latch wear.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and in a microwave that charge is lethal for a long time after the cord comes out. Nothing on this page requires the cabinet to come off, and it should not.
